My name is Anthony and I have worked in the behavioral health field for 28 years. I am very active in the behavioral health field even being acknowledged as a Notable Leader in Behavioral Health in 2023 through Crain's Detroit. At this point in my career I spend a lot of my time doing clinical training and managing a team of behavioral health professionals and the best part of my work is in providing counseling services to people. Throughout life, each of us experiences a myriad of highs and lows. These emotional and situational fluctuations form the essence of our human existence. Moments of triumph and satisfaction weave seamlessly with periods of strife and adversity. The journey through life is not a linear path.
In our first session I want to begin developing a strong collaborative relationship. This will include me asking some questions, reflecting what I am hearing and learning about you and your concerns. Often people have questions about me and I want to create space for this to occur. Ultimately, as a practitioner dedicated to supporting individuals through their journey: my goal with clients is threefold: 1. Develop a Strong Collaborative Relationship The foundation of any successful therapeutic relationship is built on trust and collaboration. By fostering a supportive and non-judgmental environment, clients feel safe to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This collaborative relationship allows for open communication and mutual respect, creating a partnership where both the client and practitioner work together towards common goals. In this relationship, the client’s voice is paramount. Their insights, perspectives, and lived experiences are invaluable in shaping the therapeutic process. Together, we navigate the complexities of life’s highs and lows, drawing on the client’s strengths and resilience to overcome challenges and celebrate successes. 2. Identify Strategies for Managing Difficulties Life’s challenges can often feel insurmountable, but with the right strategies in place, individuals can learn to manage and navigate these difficulties effectively. Through our collaborative work, we identify practical and personalized strategies that align with the client’s unique needs and circumstances. These strategies may include cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness practices, and problem-solving skills, among others. By equipping clients with a toolbox of coping mechanisms, they are better prepared to handle adversity, reduce stress, and foster a sense of control over their lives. The goal is to empower clients to face challenges with confidence and resilience, knowing they have the skills and support to navigate whatever comes their way. 3. Take a Deep and Personal Exploration Journey Understanding the underlying motives and actions that drive our behavior is crucial for personal growth and alignment. Through a deep and personal exploration journey, clients gain insight into their thoughts, emotions, and actions. This self-awareness allows for a better understanding of what truly matters to them and how they can align their lives with these values. Exploring the root causes of our behaviors and the patterns that emerge from ou
I try to live what I preach. I always train my staff that if the processes and techniques we have learned aren't applicable to our personal lives than we should never utilize them with our clients. I have a lot of life and clinical experience (Married for 29 years, 4 boys ages 22, 19, 14 and 14. 28 years of clinical experience) I value utilizing evidenced based practices and attend several trainings annually to ensure I continue to grow. I regularly speak and provide trainings to local, state, national and international audiences.
Understanding the Approach and Its Benefits I was trained in Motivational Interviewing in 1999 and became a trainer in 2001 and have lead clinical trainings in MI annually since then. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, directive method for enhancing internal change through exploring and resolving ambivalence. The rationale behind my use of MI lies in its evidence-based effectiveness, its respectful and empathetic approach, and its ability to empower clients to make meaningful changes. There are hundreds of clinical trials showing its effectiveness. Motivational interviewing is a way of approaching individuals that focuses on listening and reflections. The core principles of motivational interviewing are Expressing Empathy, Developing Discrepancy, Supporting Self Efficacy and Rolling with Resistance.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach designed to alleviate distress associated with traumatic memories. The rationale behind using EMDR in therapy is grounded in its robust theoretical framework, standardized therapeutic approach, and substantial empirical support. By facilitating the reprocessing of traumatic memories, EMDR offers a powerful tool for alleviating psychological distress and promoting mental health. As research continues to explore its mechanisms and expand its applications, EMDR remains a valuable and effective therapeutic modality for those seeking relief from the burdens of trauma and other psychological conditions.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized form of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and altering negative thought patterns and behaviors. This therapeutic approach is grounded in the notion that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, and by modifying distorted thinking, we can effect positive changes in our emotions and actions.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has emerged as a highly effective treatment for individuals suffering from various psychological disorders, particularly those characterized by emotional dysregulation and self-destructive behaviors. The rationale for engaging in DBT therapy is multifaceted, encompassing its unique therapeutic approach, the specific skills it imparts, and its success in treating a range of mental health issues. DBT Skills are often very helpful for clients to learn. These four skills are Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness.
