New to Grow
Hello, my name is Rhonda Baker. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 8 years of counseling experience in both the mental health community and prison setting. As a therapist, I see myself as a compassionate and supportive guide. I value creating a safe, non-judgmental space for my clients to explore their thoughts and feelings. I'm passionate about helping people build resilience and find their strengths. I offer supportive listening, empathy, compassion, and solution focused assistance to help you work toward your own personal growth and goals.
During our first session together, my goal is to provide a welcoming and supportive space for us to get to know one another. I want you to feel heard without judgment as you tell me about who you are and what you need, as well as giving you the opportunity to learn about me. We are simply taking the first step towards change and growth- it's a space to ask any questions you have and to start shaping a plan that really works for you and feels right. During our first session, we will also go over mutual expectation and boundaries that will facilitate a therapeutic partnership based on trust and mutual respect for one another.
I take a collaborative, person-centered approach, emphasizing empathy, compassion, open-mindedness, and collaboration, and tailor therapy to your individual needs and strengths. I recognize that not all therapeutic methods are going to work for everyone and work with you to find what works best for you. I utilize methods and techniques that are from cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, mindfulness, strength-based, solution focused, and narrative therapies to help you begin making positive changes that you want to see in your life. I provide support and psycho-education to help you overcome barriers that your mental health symptoms may present in your day to day life.
I welcome anyone who is seeking help with mental health issues that include depression, anxiety, mood disorders, suicidal ideations, medication management support, and grief counselling. I also work well with children in the foster care system to help them understand the process and work through the changes that are occurring due to being in DSS custody. I began my career working as a DSS Child Welfare Social Worker and have over 10 years of experience with my primary focus of being a foster care social worker. I am also a kink-friendly (BDSM) and alternative lifestyle friendly provider.
Other specialties
I identify as
Strength-Based
We will explore and identify your existing strengths and resources rather than just the problems you are overwhelmed by. I use strengths based techniques to help build and empower you to realize your own potential to cope with conflict in a healthy way.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I utilize person center practices to create a supportive and non-judgmental environment, respecting that you are the expert of your own life and my role is to act as a guide in helping you discover your own solutions and paths toward growth.
Motivational Interviewing
I use motivational interviewing skills as a means to strengthen your motivation for change. I gently help you explore and resolve any ambivalence about making changes in your life. I use this to help guide you toward your own reasons and commitment to change.
Narrative
In essence, narrative therapy is used to help you reshape and retell the stories that you have lived. By using this approach, my goal is to assist you in seeing yourself as the author of your own story, so you can rewrite those stories in a way that highlights your strengths and opens up new possibilities.
