EFT can be adapted for individuals (emotionally focused individual therapy /EFIT) or for families (emotionally focused family therapy/EFFT). EFT draws from the fundamental tenets of other therapeutic approaches, including attachment theory, family systems therapy, and Gestalt therapy. The three stages of EFT are de-escalation, restructuring, and integration1. The goals of EFT are to increase emotional awareness, self-regulation, and interpersonal bonding.
