My clients tend to feel as though they have a partner/coach on their side, who can understand their issues, as well as provide the guidance that is needed to get through the difficult times. My clients also learn to understand themselves better, as well as gain the tools needed, to create a more positive future for themselves. My clients tend to look forward to each session, to gain insights and tools, as they share past, present and new developments, as they occur.
I tend to think of myself as eclectic, which means that I will use different approaches that tend to meet the needs of my clients. For example, if I notice that there are long-standing issues that are not being addressed or feelings of anxiety; each time a sensitive issue is mentioned, I may use not only a Freudian approach or free association, to look back on the roots of these issues; but also behavioral modification techniques as well, to start reducing feelings of anxiety. Many times, dual approaches are necessary to resolve the same issue. I also use cognitive/behavioral modification techniques as well, as negative thoughts can be eliminated and replaced with positive thoughts, for example.
I tend to provide counseling a bit more than psychotherapy if I feel that my client is open to hearing exactly what is going on within themselves and in the environment that they have created for themselves. I will provide concrete solutions as well as homework assignments, to help my client to resolve their current issues. I will also employ Freudian therapy, in some situations, by allowing my client to share much of their past and present; whereby, I will slowly start to inject, how my client has played a role, through their subconscious mind, as it relates to their current situation. At times, I will also educate my clients on what exactly anxiety and depression are; and how to eliminate it.
