LPC, 25 years of experience
Hi! My name is Shelley Roberts and I've been a clinical therapist for approximately 25 years, I absolutely enjoy my job and meeting with amazing clients. I'm more of a solution focused therapist, something I learned when I was a therapist at an inpatient treatment center. I will help my clients to identify their core beliefs about themselves, challenge ineffective behaviors/thought processes, and teach them the coping skills that will hopefully increase their quality of life.
After checking in with my clients about how they feel about being in the therapy session, what their expectations are for therapy, and to have the client help create their treatment goals. The first session also consists of an hour-long "interview" called a psychosocial to gain a better understanding of the client.
My office is in a residential setting that provides a quiet and serene environment. I also have a very sweet and loving therapy cat named Molly for clients who like cats! If you're not a cat lover, not a problem at all! Molly has good boundaries. I really enjoy helping my clients get past insecurities and fear that impacts their quality of life.
I have worked with a wide variety of personalities with my clients past and present. What I mainly ask of my clients is to give change a chance, try to challenge negative core beliefs, and be patient with themselves and others.
I like the DBT model in that it gives my client more hands on and in the moment skills to use. I'm more of a Solution Focused therapist and find that learning and practicing the DBT skills really help my client's quality of life improve!
I find that many of my clients begin therapy focusing on what they can't do, instead of what they can do. Positive therapy helps by showing my clients their options they have to attain their therapeutic goals.
Learning and practicing the classic CBT skills is always helpful to build a foundation with insight to underlying issues.
