Hello! I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) based in Duluth, MN. I received my Masters of Science in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 2014 and have been practicing in a variety of mental health settings for the past 10 years. I have worked with individuals, in a variety of settings, who struggle with varying severity of symptoms and functional impairment caused by those symptoms.
In order for therapy to be effective, rapport between therapist and client must be established. Initial therapy sessions with me with focus on building our therapeutic relationship, understanding the concerns that have brought you into therapy, and your desired outcomes for therapy. During this time, I also want to create space for you to determine if my style of practice is right for you. If I am not a good fit, and you wish to try someone else I will gladly refer you to someone who may be better for you.
Over the past 10 years, I have worked with a variety of client populations. I feel this experience has helped develop an ease in building rapport by making clients feel comfortable and their experiences validated. I recognize that each client experiences their own barriers in therapy, so I strive to work with each client where they are at in their lives to the best of my ability.
While a majority of my practice has been with individuals 18+, I have recently expanded to working with children and adolescents as well. Though it is a newer population for me, I am very excited to keep learning and developing my skills in child psychotherapy.
During my 10 years of experience working in the mental health field, I have worked in various settings with many different populations. Regardless of the setting or client population, CBT has been successful as it focuses on the relationship between beliefs and actions or behaviors. Many people come into therapy as they feel "stuck". Thoughts and behaviors that have previously "worked" for them are no longer serving them and they are unsure how to proceed.
In my therapy practice, I frequently utilize motivational interviewing to explore a client's investment in change and to explore discrepancies between a client's statements and actions throughout the therapeutic process. Progress is not linear, and there are often "roadblocks" or stumbles in therapy. This is normal! Through motivational interviewing, I can help my client identify and address fears, or discomfort around the "change process" in supportive and nonjudgemental way.
There will be many opportunities for psychoeducation throughout the therapeutic journey but most frequently will be related to symptom presentation, clarification on diagnostics, potential referrals and reason for those referrals, identifying psychological triggers, and general terminology.
Trauma is a common experience among clients in therapy. Whether it is the primary reason for seeking therapy or not, it is important to validate these experiences, explore the role of the trauma in symptom presentation, and explore barriers to progress that may arise as the trauma is processed.
