After many years of exploring a variety of jobs I finally began to focus on assisting others in this adventure called "life ." As an adult. I began serving through Christian ministry and then realized I was even more fulfilled in working more specifically in the wider field of mental health. After getting both master's and a doctoral degree in mental health, I worked in clinical settings, counseling centers, crisis centers, my own private practice , and university settings. While managing my own counseling center, I also served several years teaching graduate students in the areas of counseling and psychology. My joy comes from helping others regain control of life when cognitions, emotions, and behaviors have caused distress. We do not always understand the "why" of life experiences, however we can gain mastery of our thinking, feeling, and doing and continue to enhance functioning and happiness.
Effective counseling is relational. The initial session helps both the patient and the therapist to try to determine if the relationship can be therapeutically effective. The first session is an introduction that allows the patient the opportunity to present the issues that have made them decide to ask for therapy. This is the opportunity for both the patient and the therapist to begin to build a working relationship. .
I am confident in my competence and experience. I believe my strongest strengths are my attitudes and views of the patient. I honor and respect each patient as a unique individual. DNA evidence has supported the view that you and I are one of a kind. I do not expect a patient to fit a textbook model. I want the person to be who they were created to be and help them grow toward becoming the best version of self.
I work most effectively with older adolescents, young adults, adults, and aging adults. The assessment of diagnostic issues comes from identifying the symptoms and leads to focus of the treatment. Symptoms often overlap diagnostic categories, and the assessment helps determine the treatment. At this time, Dr. Mapes does not work with couples or families at this time.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
My primary theoretical approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Moods or emotions result from mindful awareness that is producing pictures. As we think, we feel. This approach allows the therapist and the client to use numerous additional theoretical concepts to explain both causation and effective treatment. Effective therapy incorporates an elective approach and can draw from humanistic, behavioral, mindful, and spiritual resources.
Eclectic
My experience with this treatment has allowed me to meet with a wide range of patients. Treatment is led by client needs. I honor and respect the uniqueness of every individual and I am careful not to assign a cookie-cutter approach to making a diagnostic assessment and therapy treatment. The goal is to meet the need of each patient as they are experiencing their own life situation. Treatment is uniquely designed as a collaborated plan to effectively restore the client to health.
Christian Counseling
Spirituality can have different levels of importance for individuals. It is important to identify each person's level of importance and provide treatment that honors the person and his or her level of need. It is not my goal to provide a religious model and expect each person to match my model. Each person is challenged to understand the spirituality in his or her own life and develop the healthiest aspects of their spiritual model that will lead to health, happiness, and life fulfillment.
