New to Grow
My name is Jessica Scales and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC # 10501) in North Carolina. I am also a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional (CCATP). I have been counseling for over 13 years, with children, adolescents, and young adults (ages 18-30) being my specialty areas. I enjoy helping younger children make sense of the world around them and figure out how to navigate the big emotions they experience daily. With adolescents, I feel it is important to make them feel heard and have a safe space to process past or present trauma, peer-related issues, family stressors, and personal changes and emotions. For young adults, it is important for them to have a safe space to explore life transitions and the emotional and mental stressors or effects that may accompany these changes. I believe in working with each individual in a holistic way, considering all areas of their lives: emotional, physical, spiritual, familial support, personal, environmental, financial, and social. I utilize interventions based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing while incorporating play-based care, faith-based care, and Expressive Arts techniques. The counseling space is the space for individuals to feel safe, heard, and able to process any life circumstances, big or small, without judgment and with unconditional positive regard. I intend to create this safe space for healing and each individual's counseling journey.
In the first session, you can expect me to highly emphasize building rapport and creating collaboration in our therapeutic relationship. We will complete any intake forms and background details in order to establish a goal, or multiple goals, for us to work towards in our counseling relationship.
My strengths are my ability to openly connect with children, adolescents, and young adults and allow them the freedom to express themselves and lead their counseling journey. I utilize creative interventions to help individuals open up more and process any past or present emotions and thoughts. I enjoy engaging activities in therapy that yield to bigger discussions and "aha" moments. Expressive arts, self-reflection, and focusing on the entire wellbeing of an individual help to create progress in therapy and personal growth for the clients.
I have been counseling for over 13 years, working mostly with children, adolescents, and young adults (ages 18-30) in helping them work through emotional issues, peer or school-related issues, and family concerns. My specialty areas of focus range from anxiety, depression, self-harm, self-esteem, defiance and anger management, spiritual journeys, grief, and conflict within the family system. I also like to focus on areas of wellness and take a holistic approach in one's care. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, play-based therapy, psychoeducation, and expressive arts therapy in working through individual or family concerns and helping clients reach their treatment goals.
