Hi I am Jack Cottom a licensed professional counselor. I have been practicing psychotherapy for the past 10 years. I am native Philadelphian however have traveled quite a bit. Its actually one of my passions! I identify as a Black American male of African descent which gives me a certain perspective and experience of the world. I have a lot of experience working with folks who share my gender, ethnic, and racial make up as well as experience working with folks from many different demographics. I am open to working with anyone who is vested in healing and working through personal issues. I believe counseling is hugely powerful because through the relationship you are able to gain some awareness about yourself, learn some skills, and implement those skills to live the life that you ultimately want to live. My goal in my practice is to assist you with addressing the 'thing' that has you stuck in a certain place whether is a way of thinking and/or behaving, trauma , or lack of knowledge and/or skill. Again, my goal is to get you up, moving, and operating at your best levels AND most importantly feeling better!

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, then dive into the specific challenges you're facing. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have a great deal of experience and success treating issues such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, low self esteem, and common social anxieties. My biggest strengths are my ability to relate and connect to my clients despite any differences and my lived experiences as a Black American male of African descent specifically around experiences of racism, social injustices, and experience of privileges of being male and American.

I use cognitive behavioral therapy to help you explore and consider other ways of thinking, and behaving. I also incorporate personal story to help you draw from and make decisions about your own conflicts, values, and choices.
