In our first session together we will start with introductions and then start to establish goals for therapy based on your primary concerns. I may ask about specific feelings, thoughts, and behaviors to gain a better understanding of your mental and emotional well-being. I will provide an overview of the therapeutic process to try and help with your understanding and comfort level and will be open to answering any questions you have. The most important goal for me in the first session is that you feel safe and that we begin to lay the foundation for the therapeutic work ahead.
I have worked with clients from birth to hospice but the majority of my therapy clients have been adults between the ages of 30-70. I would be available to work with adolescents around adoption, grief, depression, and anxiety. I have a broad range of clinical experience working with individuals in the following areas: Depression and anxiety, adjustment disorders, life transitions, grief and loss, chronic illness, adjustment to illness, infertility, Postpartum depression and anxiety, adoption, relationship and communication issues.
CBT is a structured, goal-oriented, and time-limited therapy that has been demonstrated to be effective across a range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, and more. CBT is based on the premise that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, and by addressing and changing dysfunctional thought patterns we can effectively manage our emotions and behaviors. Clients learn to identify automatic thoughts, which are spontaneous and often negative thoughts that arise in response to situations. In my practice we will look at core beliefs, which are fundamental beliefs about oneself, others, and the world, and explore them for deeper understanding of why we feel this way. We will work together to reframe irrational or distorted thoughts and try and shift to more balanced perspectives which will replace negative thinking patterns. We will look at homework assignments to practice intervention strategies and coping skills and strategies to manage stress, anxiety, or other challenging emotions. Problem-solving skills are emphasized to help you approach difficulties more effectively and helps promote the application of therapeutic concepts in real-life situations. We will regularly assess and monitor progress towards established goals and adjust interventions based on the your evolving needs and successes.
