Hi, I am Teresa Hillenbrand. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor working telehealth out of San Antonio, TX. I used evidence-based approaches to solve real-life problems that burden people. As a counselor, I want to provide you with the insight to understand what is going on in your cognitive life so that you can begin to get out of the rut that is keeping you back from being fulfilled and pursuing life to its fullest. If appropriate, a Christian perspective is used in therapy. What we’re going to discover in counseling is that sometimes the world that we live in can put a lot of stress on our God-given body and mind, and we can get stuck in a response that was designed by God to protect us, but ends up causing us a lot of stress, trauma, anxiety and even depression because society pressures us too much. We want to get back to that pure state of Eden, or very close to it and live our values. We do this by reconnecting with your God-given true self and encouraging the true self to flourish within today’s world. We will understand our behaviors that prevent us from becoming our true-self and heal the parts that led us away from our fulfillment of Self in the first place. By doing so, you will reconnect with God, your true self, others, and the world. I want to provide you with the tools whereby you can begin to understand what has happened, what is happening, and what positive outcomes can result from therapy. My approach is to provide you with Christian and evidence-based insights into the human condition and its effect on body and mind so that you may move towards Christian principled resolutions.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Today people are more stressed out and depressed than at any other time in my twenty plus years as a counselor. I want you to know that what you are feeling is not your fault, even though it can seem that way. As a counselor, I want to provide you with the insight to understand what is going on in your cognitive and spiritual life so that you can begin to get out of the rut that is keeping you back from being fulfilled and pursuing life to its fullest. Many of the discoveries recently made in the fields of neuroscience and cognitive behavior can be translated into very practical steps that will help you realize your potential because doing so will give you fulfilment in your life regardless of where you find yourself now.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I use IFS (Internal Family Systems) in my therapy and hold an IFS certificate in this therapeutic approach. I am also certified by Strong Star in CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy) to work with US veterans who suffer from PTSD. Strong Star is approved by US Department of Veterans Affairs for therapy. I am also certified as a Safe and Sound provider utilizing Stephen Porges' work on neurology and on our defense mechanisms.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Over the years I’ve learned that every client is a unique individual who has special gifts waiting to be unwrapped. Sometimes the world gets in the way of those gifts. Sometimes other people do not hold our best interests at heart. In counseling, I help you to remove those limiting beliefs so that your true self can emerge. I was a former nun for ten years and also hold a degree in theology, so I am very comfortable with a Christian approach that addresses depression, anxiety, PTSD, couples and family issues. I look forward to meeting you.
