Hello! My name is Molly Thomas (she/her) and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) based in Massachusetts, currently offering telehealth services to clients statewide. I completed my Masters of Clinical Social Work at Smith College in 2008, I have spent the majority of my career working as a therapist, clinical supervisor and leader in residential, outreach, community mental health and healthcare settings. My specific areas of focus include young adults and adults, those in the LGBTQIA+ communities, as well as those experiencing difficulties or discomfort with change, anxiety, grief/loss, depression and feeling "stuck." As a long-time clinical supervisor, I also love working with other professionals, particularly those in helping professions. If you're motivated to seek therapy and ready to do the work, then I'd love to work with you!

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

A first session with me is an opportunity for both of us to get a sense of one another. During this session, I tend to ask more direct questions to better understand your experience and get to know you - your strengths, interests and supports - and we'll begin to identify what would be helpful from me as we get started in our work together. We will spend time talking about what led you to seeking therapy, your past experiences with therapy, if any, and what your hopes are going forward. We will begin identifying treatment goals that will inform our treatment plan. We will continue to develop a connection over time and check in about how it's going to ensure that you're getting what you need from the process.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I strive to create an inviting and comfortable space for clients by showing up with authenticity. While I hold safe and professional boundaries, I am also human and have found that connecting around our shared humanity can be powerful. I engage in active listening, have a calm demeanor and I invite humor and playfulness into sessions. I am comfortable holding space for clients to sit with and express difficult emotions, as well as taking a more directive approach.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I offer compassionate, individualized therapy to adults of all genders, sexualities, racial/cultural identities and bodies. I particularly enjoy working with young adults/adults and the LGBTQIA+ community, though I strive to create an open and affirming space for all. I specialize in supporting folks who are navigating life/career/relationship changes, or coping with feelings of anxiety, depression, grief/loss and being stuck. I work as a collaborator with my clients to develop tools and resources that will support their goals, and move at a pace that feels right for them.

My treatment methods

Motivational Interviewing

I use MI to support clients in making changes or decisions that align with their life goals and values. This is a strengths-based, person-centered approach that is especially helpful for people who are experiencing ambivalence about making change.*

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I integrate tenants of CBT throughout sessions as appropriate to support clients with understanding and changing certain thought processes (like negative beliefs) that do not serve them and learn different strategies to reduce symptoms of anxiety, low self-esteem, feeling stuck, etc.

Strength-Based

Strong relationships are key to healing and growth. My approach centers around creating a welcoming and affirming space for clients so that we're able to develop a trusting therapeutic relationship. I incorporate a variety of styles and techniques depending upon your individual needs and goals. I most frequently draw from Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness based interventions, Narrative Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
