Elsie Vazquez-Long
I earned my bachelor's degree at Connecticut College, in New London, CT [double majoring in Sociology and Hispanic Studies], and my master's degree in social work from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work, West Hartford, CT. Early in my social work journey I worked in various settings including the Bronx, NY and Hartford, CT, gaining a deep appreciation for people of diverse cultures, backgrounds, languages, experiences and strengths. I am bilingual [English/Spanish] and have extensive experience working with individuals from various Latin-American countries, including the Caribbean. In my clinical work I have conducted sessions solely in Spanish when clients prefer. Throughout my clinical experience I have found it best to lead with dignity and respect towards anyone navigating difficult emotional, mental health, and overall life challenges. My practice is therefore strengths-based, values-driven, and rooted in the fundamental belief that individuals can exert agency and autonomy over their decisions and choices. I also believe in a collaborative approach to healing and attempt to provide a space that challenges clients to acknowledge areas of need and embrace their potential for growth. The space I provide is free of judgement; individuals can expect to feel valued, respected, listened to and safe.
First session
The initial session will allow clients to present their concerns, assess compatibility, discuss treatment approaches more in-depth, delineate client needs [including any past experience with treatment , i.e what has worked or not], and develop an understanding of the treatment process. Along with client I am also open to exploring outside referrals or resources if necessary. My goal is to help individuals build insight and clarity into their presenting concerns and develop reachable and attainable goals towards stability and healing.
Strengths
I believe in and acknowledge the power of silence in therapy as a space for reflection, introspection, and reframing. I am also comfortable challenging clients to reach into uncomfortable areas of their lives, do the work to acknowledge unhealthy patterns of coping, and to value the possibility for healthier engagement with themselves and others.
Ideal clients
I take a collaborative approach to healing and work with any individual willing to engage in the therapeutic process to make positive changes, build self-awareness, resiliency, self confidence, and seek long-term emotional well-being. I have a good understanding of life stages and able to meet individuals where they are at. Clients with a wide range of emotional/behavioral concerns are prioritized, including anyone experiencing the sequela of trauma exposure/complex trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, or are having difficulty meeting life transitions [feeling "stuck" or unsure of next steps]. Clients from varied cultural, economic and social backgrounds are encouraged, and those who speak Spanish only or are bilingual [English/Spanish].
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use this method to assist clients in identifying and reframing negative or unhelpful thoughts [adverse patterns of thinking ] that lead to distressing behaviors and emotions.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
I introduce and review with clients grounding and relaxation techniques that help offset or ameliorate any exacerbation of anxious or stressful behaviors and thinking
