Kortney Clinton
I’m a therapist who works with girls and young women as they navigate all the different layers of girlhood—friendships, family, relationships, school, college, growing up, figuring out who they are, and sometimes healing from things they’ve carried for a long time. Therapy with me is a place where you can simply be.
This not only reduces fear and confusion about symptoms but also empowers clients to recognize patterns and actively participate in their healing process.
You don’t have to have the perfect words, have everything figured out, or fit into some version of what girlhood is “supposed” to look like. Come as you are. We’ll talk, laugh, process, and work through the real-life stuff together.
First session
The first session is really about getting to know each other. I want to hear about you—not just what brought you to therapy, but what life looks like right now, what matters to you, what’s been hard, and what you’d like to be different. You don’t have to tell me your whole life story on day one, and I’m not going to make you talk about something you’re not ready for. We’ll take our time, talk about what you want from therapy, and start figuring out what our work together could look like. My goal is for you to leave feeling like you were able to be yourself, you were heard, and therapy might actually be a space you can feel comfortable coming back to.
Strengths
I have a way of making therapy feel a little less like therapy and a lot more like girl talk—with purpose. You can bring what’s actually happening in your life into the room: the friendship drama, family stuff, relationship questions, college stress, big emotions, things from your past, or that one situation you’ve replayed in your head all week. We might use music, journaling, shows, social media, creative activities, or everyday situations to help make sense of what you’re feeling. I’m not here to talk over you with a bunch of therapy words. I want you to understand what’s happening in your life and have tools you can actually use outside of our sessions. Most importantly, you don’t have to perform here. Girlhood doesn’t have to be perfect, pretty, or fit an aesthetic. This is a space for your version of it.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is a girl or young woman trying to figure out life, relationships, emotions, and herself. You may be dealing with anxiety, family or friendship issues, a breakup, school or college stress, big emotions, changes at home, or things from your past that you’re realizing still affect you. Or maybe nothing is necessarily “wrong”—you just want a space to talk, understand yourself better, and navigate this season of your life. You don’t have to come to therapy knowing exactly what you need. We can figure that out together. There’s no perfect way to do girlhood, and you don’t have to have it all together before you walk through the door.
Treatment methods
Psychoeducation
Sometimes just understanding why you feel, think, or respond a certain way can make things feel less confusing. I break down things like anxiety, emotions, relationships, attachment, stress, trauma, boundaries, and coping in everyday language—not therapy talk. The goal is for you to leave sessions understanding yourself better and knowing what you can actually do with what you’ve learned.
Narrative
Sometimes the stories we’ve been told about ourselves—or the ones we’ve started to believe—aren’t the whole story. I use Narrative Therapy to help you explore how your experiences, relationships, family, and different seasons of girlhood have shaped the way you see yourself. Together, we can separate who you are from what you’ve been through and make room for the story you want to carry forward.
Solution Focused Brief Treatment
We don’t always have to spend the entire session talking about what’s wrong. Sometimes we need to talk about what you want to be different and how we can start getting you there. I use SFBT to help you notice what’s already working, recognize strengths you may overlook, and identify small, realistic steps toward the life, relationships, and version of yourself you want to build.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
Big feelings can be hard to manage, especially when they lead to reactions you wish you could take back. I use DBT to help you better understand your emotions, slow things down when everything feels like a lot, communicate what you need, set boundaries, and handle difficult moments differently. We focus on real situations happening in your life so the skills actually make sense when you need them.
