Hello! I'm Samantha, First, I want to congratulate you on taking a very difficult first step, one many people may never take. Your first therapy session can feel overwhelming, exciting, scary and many other emotions but I am here to ensure through it all you feel safe! In my years as a therapist, I have worked with clients seeking education, clarity and comfort related to their mental health symptoms. While in session with me, I will ensure that you feel empowered, heard and challenged. I want you to feel as though I am your teammate in this journey you are embarking on to improve your quality of life.
In our first session together, we will set expectations for therapy (from me and from you), get to know each other, dive deeper into your motivators for therapy and create some treatment goals together. Our first session will usually end with some small homework assignment as this allows your session to continue through your week.
I feel my greatest strength as a provider is my candidness as a therapist. I truly believe there is no "cookie-cutter" way to do therapy and I want my clients to know that I am human too and that we can work through problems, battles or challenges together. I work with each individual as they are, an individual.
I love working with individuals who are eager for change and open to trying something different. Maybe you have done therapy several times and didn't feel its true benefit. It is my hope that we can foster a relationship that is comfortable and a place you feel at ease to open up. When working with me, success will look different for everyone and I will be sure to challenge you and remind you of the progress you have made.
I utilize CBT to address negative or unhealthy thought patterns that often can perpetuate depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and/or trauma symptoms. Together we will examine how your thoughts, feelings and behaviors impact each other. I believe CBT is an essential part of the therapeutic process and I often use CBT to challenge my clients throughout session.
Understanding the stages of grief, the "normalities" of grief and normalizing the grief process are some of the first steps to healing. I also firmly believe that in order to properly grieve we must address and understand many societal pressures and myths about the grief process. In grief therapy, my goal is to normalize this process for my clients.
Whether a client of my has experience trauma on a small scale, large scale, or maybe not at all, I work from a trauma-informed approach.
Similar to CBT, CPT utilizes cognitive reframing in-session to process trauma on our ideologies related to traumatic events in a healthy and productive way.
In combination with many of the approaches above, it is imperative that we work together to re-connect your mind and body. Mental Health does such a good job of disconnecting the two that we often miss warning signs that we are entering crisis. Utilize coping skills, grounding and mindfulness techniques we will work to connect mind and body and get to know ourselves again.
