Alex Hernandez

LMHC11 years of experience

I'm a licensed mental health professional and addiction specialist with 20 years experience in the field. I have personally experienced transformation via my own personal recovery and current 25 years of sobriety. I have a deep personal understanding and knowledge of the experience of pain and suffering and what is required to change. I am living proof of the power of therapy and the ability for people to change and recover no matter how difficult the circumstance.

First session

The first time we meet I will be getting to know you. You will tell me about what brings you to therapy and you will answer questions regarding different areas of your life. The goal will be information gathering in order to conduct an assessment of your presenting concerns. It will be a relaxed atmosphere.

Strengths

My greatest strength as a clinician is my personal experience. I have confidence in the ability to change. I know what it takes to change and get better and I can help you get the same results.

Ideal clients

I work best with men of all ages. In particular with those who are health conscious, willing to work to better themselves and improve their lives. I work very well woth anxiety, stress, depression, addiction, alcohol and drug abuse.

Treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I help clients develop a new relationship to their thoughts. Clients learn that their thoughts are not fact and that they do not have to believe everything their heads tell them. Clients become better at recognizing when they are engaging in thought patterns that are causing them suffering and more importantly how to stop this process and obtain relief.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

This method focuses on self-defeating, maladaptive thought patterns, which lead to painful emotions. Negative thoughts are identified and challenged (e.g., where is the evidence for this belief?) Thoughts are examined for their rationality, logic and utility. By changing your thoughts, we can change the way you feel and then the way you act.

Eclectic

I use whatever treatment methods and approaches work best for the client. I do not adhere strictly to any one particular theory or modality. I will use whatever works best for you. Sometimes we will focus on feelings, sometimes on thoughts and sometimes on behavior.

Supportive

Therapy does not have to be reserved just for people that are experiencing serious problems or crisis. Therapy can simply be for someone who would like a professional to talk to from time to time. Therapy can be for those that are already doing well, but want to do better (i.e., self-optimize). It can be used as a source of support for life's ongoing stressors.
