Cameron Stewart
Something shifts when you finally name what you've been carrying. Maybe it's an identity you've been sitting with quietly, the pressure of parenting nobody prepared you for, a relationship that keeps feeling impossible, or simply a sense that you've been stuck in patterns you can't quite see your way out of. I'm Cameron, an LCSW working with adolescents, adults, and parents across New Jersey via telehealth. I offer affirming, identity-sensitive care for people from all walks of life, including LGBTQIA+ and transgender clients. Whatever brought you here, my first job is building trust strong enough to hold it. Much of my work draws on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: we examine the thoughts and patterns keeping you stuck, and find practical ways to shift them. Technique helps, but the relationship comes first. Sessions are collaborative and direct. For those navigating identity, grief, or trauma, I bring the same grounded, steady presence throughout.
First session
A first session is the beginning of an alliance between us. I'll spend that time getting to know you: what brought you here, what you've been carrying, and what you're hoping for. You don't need to arrive with the right words, or even a clear sense of what's wrong. We'll start wherever you are. By the end, my hope is that you feel genuinely heard, and a little lighter knowing you don't have to figure it all out on your own.
Strengths
I bring a little bit of a unique mix to therapy. Much of my formative training is in traditional talk therapy. The goal is to hold space for my client in a positive and empathetic way, and allow for new understanding and growth. But much of who I am is also grounded in evidence based and active treatment styles, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. My goal is to mix the two; to push back or provide insight in a way that still feels extremely warm and understanding.
Ideal clients
My ideal clients are adolescents and adults who may be navigating life transitions, relationship difficulties, or other challenging periods in their lives and are looking for support, guidance, and a safe space to process their experiences. I also enjoy working with individuals facing parenting challenges and the stress that can come with balancing personal and professional responsibilities. In particular, I have experience supporting those working in the education field, where the difficulties can be unique and balance hard to find. You're not alone, and things do not have to stay the same. This is a journey we can take together, and my hope is to empower you to make the changes you want, and have a better experience in life.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy is to understand how our thoughts and behaviors impact how we feel. Sometimes it can be extremely powerful to notice when changing how we think about a situation, or trying a different way to handle something can make us feel better.
Strength-Based
The goal is to focus on you as the client. You come with so many strengths, many of which you may not even notice. I try to leverage those strengths to help you make meaningful changes in your life. My belief is that we're all doing the best we can, and honoring that is so important.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
ACT is so powerful. We often have negative or difficult emotions. These are a normal part of being human! ACT focuses on the idea that these emotions aren't bad, and there isn't something wrong with us for having them. My hope is that we can accept those emotions, focus on our goals and values, and put our effort into changing the things we can.
Gender-affirming therapy
My goal in working with anyone who may be having thoughts on gender is to explore those thoughts and come to a better understanding. There is nothing to fix, only exploration of our ourselves, and for some people, making changes to better align with who we really are.
