When we feel called to work on our inner selves, we look for an experienced mental health professional who can help us navigate the complexities of modern life, as well as our inner thoughts and feelings. I'm Cynthia C. Wingate, MA, LMHC. I have a combination of private practice experience and cultural awareness that allows me to relate to each client with knowledge and compassion. I appreciate your interest in working with me. I graduated Summa cum laude from University of North Florida with a master's in counseling psychology. I'm also a graduate grant recipient for academic excellence and published co-author in The Journal of Social Psychology. In 2017, while living and practicing in Delaware, I shepherded a bill into law, ensuring others in my field would be able to practice in Delaware while holding certification from another U.S. state.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session I will tell you a little about myself and my practice. We will go over the goals that you want to accomplish and after collecting as much important information as necessary we will work together to develop your treatment plan. One of my most important goals in the first session is to establish rapport with my client(s). This has always been easy for me to achieve and clients always want to continue working with me to reach their desired goals.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My biggest strengths have come from years of experience and continuous research and the study of therapeutic techniques. I am compassionate and empathic and am well-rounded in many different areas of therapy. While I will give you the tools to use in whatever your situation, I give home assignments to work on in between sessions so we can assure that you have learned and can implement the tools effectively.h

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Research has shown that CBT is the most effective form of therapy for most folks. It does require effort on the client's part as the process involves reframing negative or harmful thoughts into more healthy thoughts. This can have a positive effect on alleviating depression and anxiety, in particular.

Gottman method

I am currently working on obtaining all the Levels required to be a certified Gottman therapist. I like it because it gives the client(s) specific things to start doing that they have not done or have stopped doing. There are cards with questions for the couple to take and work on together to strengthen their bond and reconnect if needed. This therapy starts with rebuilding what is called the Sound Relationship House. This starts with the foundation and as the couple progresses they begin to work on the next level of the house until they are on the top floor. The Gottman's techniques have been validated through rigorous research.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Today I see many clients who are worrying about the future or feeling guilt or regret about their pasts. I teach the clients to be in the present moment which reduces worry and doubt while instead they are enjoying being in the present moment where there is no worry or regret. This is where a client can truly experience joy in their lives

Grief Therapy

Many clients come in who have experienced a significant loss in their lives. I believe that it is important to help the client experience the grief process to the fullest. If a person doesn't grieve the feelings get repressed and will stay there until they experience another loss. At this time the repressed feelings will surface and the client must then grieve multiple losses.

Existential

What I have found with some clients is a need to delve into the existential side of their issues. This has allowed for an understanding of what is really causing their distress and then a plan is created to deal with the revelations the client has received through the use of existential psychology
