I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have been in the mental health field for 31 years and a clinical therapist for 24 years. I received my bachelor degree from The University of the Cumberlands in 1987 and my Masters in Social Work from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1993. I provide counseling for multiple issues to include mental health, healthy relationships, anger management, and building coping skills. I specialize and have specific training and certifications in treating people who have experienced abuse and domestic violence. My mission is to provide clinically sound, faith-based counseling accessible to those who seek it. Integration of faith in therapy will be to the extent of the individual's interest. I work with multiple clientele and provide a trusting and nonjudgmental environment, and spirituality will not be discussed or forced on those that may not have a religious belief or have no interest in incorporating faith into their treatment process.
The first session will entail getting to know each other and building a rapport for the basis of the therapeutic relationship. I encourage disclosures as well as questions to assist in developing a trusting and transparent relationship that will help the individual feel comfortable and partnered in the therapeutic process. I firmly believe that educating a client on diagnoses and treatment modalities is important in increasing awareness of the process and clarifying expectations of the therapist and client. Goals for therapy will be discussed and developed to keep focused and obtain measurable outcomes so the client will be able to monitor and assess progress for themselves.
I believe my greatest strengths are the ability to build rapport easily and provide an environment where a client feels safe and engaged. I also provide a nonjudgmental atmosphere that encourages people to feel comfortable during sessions and empowered afterwards.
I utilize CBT techniques and skills to help clients identify how their unhealthy thought patterns impact their feelings that influence their behaviors, relationships and the choices that they make. When this is discovered the client can work at staying present focused to challenge unhealthy negative and anxiety provoking thoughts, and revise them to more positive cognitive patterns. This helps them regulate their emotions, think more rationally, and build self confidence. CBT promotes personal change to make healthy choices to resolve conflict. It helps improve coping skills and relationships that leads to better quality of life.
Using an eclectic approach allows the use of different therapy modalities that can be contoured to the client's needs. Encouraging a holistic approach helps build strength in all realms of life to create a more balanced lifestyle and healthier relationships. It builds awareness and insight so that the client can identify unhealthy patterns and build coping skills to make personal changes that helps navigate progress towards their goals.
Faith based counseling can integrate one's faith in the therapeutic experience to help navigate spiritual concerns with daily life struggles. Anyone interested in Christian Counseling will be provided these services based on the extent of their interests, however, religion and spirituality will not be addressed, discussed or forced with those not interested. I provide a non-judgmental environment no matter what spiritual stance one has.
SFBT is short term therapy that focuses and identifies "what" the problem is and developing a specific solution, instead of exploring "why" the problem exists. It is goal oriented and builds on existing assets, resources and skills of the individual. Additional skills are incorporated to help make progress in resolving a specific problem and deletes obstacles for change.
