My clients will feel heard and know they are in a space where they can explore their emotions free from judgement.
abuse, personality, and mood disorders, women's issues, miscarriage, post-partum, and sexual abuse. I live and work in a very rural part of southwestern Virginia.
First session
I want my clients to feel like they have been heard and understood. I will spend the first session making sure all questions are answered and that we both have an understanding of the direction therapy will go. Time is also spent getting to know the client and discussing goals they'd like to achieve, and how they may achieve them.
Strengths
I have been described as personable and easy to talk to. I am empathic and validating. It is my desire that my clients feel heard and know they are in a space where they can explore their emotions free from judgement.
Ideal clients
Not all clients come to therapy knowing exactly what to expect. I welcome and answer questions and work to make therapy a comfortable process. A few things I value in a client is open mindedness, active participation in the therapeutic process, engaging in self-reflection, being curious and being ready to work towards better mental health. I approach each client with those same attributes.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Connecting a clients thoughts ("they hate me"), emotions (feels abandoned) and behaviors (avoids seeing them at work) to help solve current problems (feeling anxious about going to work).
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I will work with client and teach skills in emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
EMDR
I guide clients through a structured 8 phase protocol. I use bi-lateral stimulation (the client can choose either tactile or visual) to help reprocess maladaptively stored traumatic and distressing memories. This is my favorite type of therapy,
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
The human mind is seen as a system of multiple subpersonalities (Parts). I use this modality when there is trauma related dissociation or if it is a proper fit for a client.
Strength-Based
I guide my clients as we focus on their skills, resilience and personal resources.
