New to Grow
Hello, I am Duane Winter. I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the state of Minnesota. I will treat you with respect, warmth, and empathy, and am a self-motivated professional who strives to help individuals reach their full potential, while understanding you are the expert in your own life. I like to use acceptance & commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, & mindfulness, while being client or person centered. By getting to know you, we can together, figure out which type of counseling is going to be most beneficial to you & find ways to utilize your strengths. I appreciate the differences in everyone and center my treatment around the specific needs of each person I work with. Additionally, the foundation of my work with a client is the strength of our therapeutic relationship. I put a lot of emphasis towards building trust and fostering a healthy and open line of communication. My goals during each session are to promote growth and to build upon the strengths that my clients already have, so individuals can create change and focus on all the things they can control. Walking alongside clients in a supportive, encouraging way is my main objective. I believe it takes courage and strength to participate in counseling by being open and honest and leaves you feeling vulnerable. Everyone is fighting personal battles, but you do not need to do this alone and know, you are worth fighting for.

My style of therapy is warm and personal. I work by getting to know you as a person since you are the expert on your own life. Together, we can jointly come up with goals and solutions that are going to work for you. I will treat you with sensitivity, respect, and warmth by getting to know you as a unique individual. I like to use solution-focused therapy, mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. By getting to know you, we can figure out which type of counseling is going to be most beneficial to you. Seeking therapy is not an easy decision to make, and I want to commend you for wanting to create a better life for yourself. I would love to support you and be part of your journey towards the goal of a more fulfilling life. I appreciate the differences in everyone and center my treatment around the specific needs of each person I work with. Additionally, the foundation of my work with a client is the strength of our therapeutic relationship. I put a lot of emphasis towards building trust and fostering a healthy and open line of communication. My goals during each session are to promote growth and to build upon the strengths that my clients already have. Additionally, I would like to highlight that our therapeutic relationship and sessions feature a no judgement zone. Therapy should be a service/place where people feel safe and comfortable with sharing thoughts, feelings, experiences, etc. without fear of being judged. During our work together, open communication is not only encouraged, it is an essential ingredient towards the success you deserve. I believe that you are the expert of your life. I will help you find ways to utilize your strength to overcome your struggles and move you from your current situation to where you want to be. I will be your supporter, your cheerleader, your encourager, and your teammate. I believe that real change can start in the therapy session, but you make the change happen outside of session and in the real world. You can do it, you can achieve your goals. I'm looking forward to helping you do so.
I work best with adults, ages 18 and older, both men and women, who are navigating challenges such as anxiety, depression, and/or addictions. My ideal clients are seeking to improve their coping, communication, and problem-solving skills, and are self-motivated to create more balance in their lives. They are open to trying new approaches and utilizing resources outside of therapy sessions to support their personal growth.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT in therapy sessions to help you identify and change your negative thought patterns and behaviors. During sessions I will work with you to challenge unhelpful beliefs, develop healthier coping strategies, and practice new skills to help manage your stress and emotions so they do not control you. My approach is collaborative and focuses on practical solutions to improve your mental well-being.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I use Acceptance and commitment therapy in our therapy sessions to help you build psychological flexibility, encouraging you to accept difficult emotions and thoughts while committing to actions that align with your values. This approach supports your mental health by fostering resilience and promoting meaningful change in your everyday life.
Strength-Based
I use strength-based treatment in our sessions to empower you by focusing on your existing abilities, resources, and positive attributes. By identifying and highlighting your strengths, I encourage you to recognize your own resilience and potential for growth. This allows you to build confidence and motivation, enabling you to overcome challenges and set meaningful goals for your recovery. I will ask you to share moments when you felt proud and accomplished and we will explore how those strengths can be applied to your current difficulties. I also integrate collaborative goal setting, to ensure you are an active participant in your treatment plan. This helps you have a sense of ownership and helps you develop practical strategies for coping and thriving in your everyday life.
Motivational Interviewing
I use motivational interviewing to help you explore and resolve ambivalence, empowering you to make positive changes. This approach helps foster a collaborative environment where you feel heard and supported in your journey toward improved mental health and well-being.
Psychoeducation
I regularly incorporate psychoeducation into my mental health therapy sessions to empower you with knowledge about your conditions and treatment options. This approach helps you better understand your experiences, reduces stigma, and supports you in making informed decisions about your mental health.
