Livia "Daniela" Dumesnil
Hello. You have taken one of the hardest steps by looking into and beginning therapy. I have prior medical experience but changed career paths in 2001. I am originally from Texas but have lived in Colorado since 1997. I believe that you are the best historian for your past and I am a guide to help you walk through your present and into your best future.
I also offer caregiver fatigue and caregiver therapy for those dealing with a family member struggling with a chronic illness or Dementia/Alzheimer's Disease.
There is no judgment in my practice and all are welcome. I do offer spiritual/Christian counseling if this is something you are looking for. If you choose to attend sessions in the office you will also be greeted by tail wags from a furry friend. Jack and Jill are training to be in the office with clients and are proving proving to be a comfort in session.
First session
During the first session we will discuss your intake paperwork and what you are looking for. You have the ability to ask questions and I will ask you some too. I'd like to know about past therapy and what worked or what didn't work for you. We will be bale to discuss possible interventions and what you will want/need to make this a grand experience for you. If you are coming to the office the will also be able to have time with Jack and Jill. Both Jack and Jill are in training to be psychiatric service dogs. Jack has been training for some time and Jill is just getting started. However, if you do not wish for either of them to be in the office during your session, you just have to ask and arrangements your appointment, will be made for a time they will not be there.
Strengths
I have been a mental health and addictions therapist for over fifteen (15) years with multiple certifications and other training. I offer a well rounded holistic therapy to treat mind, body, and spirit through therapy sessions, support, nutrition, and other options. I have trained in EMDR and Internal Family Systems for treatment of trauma. I also offer caregiver fatigue and caregiver therapy for those dealing with a family member struggling with a chronic illness or Dementia/Alzheimer's Disease. I have found that a holistic therapy approach offers good results as we are all body, mind, and spirit inclusive. You will receive empathetic and non-judgmental services walking into the office or online.
Treatment methods
Trauma Informed Care
I create a safe and compassionate space where we can explore how past experiences may be affecting you today. We focus on your strengths, sense of safety, and ability to move forward at a pace that feels right for you. We will begin by talking about what feels comfortable for you and build coping skills you can apply in everyday life before moving into anything that feels overwhelming. Past experiences do not have be overwhelming traumatic to be affecting you today. We look at how your body and mind processed experiences in the past as this is more telling than if you are able to specifically call up one specific traumatic experience.
EMDR
EMDR can help you process painful or traumatic experiences that continue to affect your thoughts, emotions, or body. Together, we work toward helping these experiences feel less overwhelming and allowing you to feel more present and grounded. Before moving into any specific EMDR sessions we make sure you first have tools/coping skills to feel grounded and safe. When you're ready, we identify a troubling memory, belief, or situation and gently bring it to mind while using bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation simply means that both sides of your brain will be working throughout the therapeutic processes such as guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds. Your brain is given the opportunity to process/reprocess the experience differently. You guide the pauses as needed and we will check in throughout the therapy.
Somatic
Our experiences can live not only in our thoughts and emotions, but also in our bodies. Somatic approached help you notice and understand physical sensations, stress responses, and patterns in your body while developing greater awareness, regulation, and a sense of safety. Instead of focusing only on talking about past experiences, we also pay attention to what is happening in your body. You may notice where you feel tension, tightness, warmth, heaviness, or other sensations. We may use breathing, grounding, movement, or other body exercises to help you recognize and regulate your body's responses to stress.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps us understand the different "parts" of ourselves and the ways these parts try to protect us. Through curiosity and self-compassion, we work toward greater inner understanding, balance, and healing. Together we will explore the different "parts" of you that show up in different situations- such as the part that worries, the part that gets angry, the part that wants to avoid things, or the part that tries keep everyone happy. Instead of continuing to fight these parts, we get curious about what the "part" is trying to protect. This can help you understand yourself with more compassion and to respond to yourself in healthier ways.
Motivational Interviewing
Change can be difficult, especially when part of you wants to change and another part isn't sure. I use motivational interviewing to help you explore what matters to you, discover your own reasons for change, and build confidence in taking the next steps. We will have conversations about what you want to change and what may be getting int he way. Rather than telling you what you should do, I help you explore your own reasons for change. We look at both sides- what you like about the way things are and what you would like to be different- then we will identify realistic steps and a possible timeline that fits your goals.
