New to Grow
Hello, my name is Kelsy and I'm a therapist who enjoys working with clients with ADHD, bipolar disorder, trauma, anxiety and/or depression. As a marriage and family therapist, I look at the systems a client is part of i.e. their family, workplace, community, country and world. I seek to understand how behaviors and symptoms make sense within the larger context where they occur. I work with individuals 13+ and couples. In my therapy practice, all religions, spiritual beliefs or having none are respected and explored as needed. Most importantly, I look forward to listening and seeking to understand first as the foundation for our interactions.
In the first session I will ask questions and have a conversation with you that helps me understand you and where you're coming from. It's important to know you a bit before jumping into providing feedback. I will clarify and ensure I'm understanding as we continue. My goal is to make you feel heard, listened to and understood. I usually recommend weekly sessions to start so I can get to know you and you can get to know me and how I work. I find this makes for a good therapeutic relationship.
Being trained as a marriage and family therapist, I deeply respect and understand the importance of family relationships, both current and the family you grew up in. We are shaped by these experiences so much so that often times connections to our current feelings and behaviors are influenced by them. Trauma is another topic I am very familiar with. I use the evidenced based practice of ART (accelerated resolution therapy) that allows you to avoid retelling the tale of the tramua while processing it more completely so you can be less impacted by it in the present day.
My ideal client is around 40 years old and deals with ADHD and a mood disorder (bipolar, anxiety and/or depression). They enjoy a more holistic approach to therapy that takes into account how they're functioning in their relationships, at home, at work and in their community. They prefer spirituality or religion to be incorporated for a mind, body, spirit approach. They are motivated to improve on every front discussed. Their goal is to be a better person, overall and have fewer difficulties in the future.
Other specialties
I identify as
Couples Counseling
I am Gottman informed in my approach to couples therapy. This is the approach I use to help couples become more open with one another and regain the level of respect for each other that they once had. It allows me to help couples with things like communication and forgiveness. I have much experience helping couples to get to a better place emotionally with one another.
Strength-Based
I am strength-based in my treatment approach this means I will note things you are doing well, not just critique what's going poorly. I believe we must acknowledge the positives in order to build on them to address the areas of concern. It is not helpful to be negative, though a reality check is sometimes needed.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Mindfulness is all about living in the now. I find different activities and breath work help clients to be more present in the moment and they experience less anxiety and depressive symptoms when practicing mindfulness.
Trauma Informed Care
For trauma and PTSD I use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) which allows for processing using eye movements (similar to EMDR) to process trauma without having to relive it repeatedly (or tell the clinician everything in detail)
Psychoeducation
I educate clients on the illness that is affecting them. This is especially true for mood disorders such as bipolar, anxiety and depression.
