Hello, my name is Madelyn Torres and I am a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Throughout the years I have worked in community mental health, medical social work, and immigration social work. I have served many populations struggling with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, low self-esteem, narcissistic abuse, and codependent relationships. I am passionate about working women of color in the Latinx Community struggling with complex trauma, family issues, grief, job-related stress, and school-related stress. In my practice, I utilize a strength-based and trauma-informed approach along with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational interviewing, and behavioral activation. Healing and emotional recovery begin by working together collaboratively to find the strength that was always in you.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Clients should expect to feel heard, validated, and empowered to reach their goals. A good session should have a balanced dialogue between the client and their provider. Therapy should not feel like your therapist "talking at you" or "telling you what to do." Therapy also shouldn't feel like "talking to a wall" while your therapist just nods and provides little to no feedback. As your therapist, you can expect to have my undivided attention. I will also provide constructive feedback that aligns with your personal goals.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As a first-generation Latina, I was drawn to a career as a therapist because of my deep commitment to helping marginalized communities, particularly those navigating the complexities of immigration. My journey began as a social worker specializing in immigration law, trauma, and domestic violence where I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of trauma and displacement on individuals and families. Driven by a desire to provide holistic support, I started offering pro bono psych evaluations for immigration attorneys, recognizing the critical need for mental health advocacy in the legal process. This work ignited my passion for helping others dismantle self-limiting beliefs and heal from complex trauma, leading me to transition to private practice. In this setting, I can focus on empowering individuals to overcome their challenges and build fulfilling lives.

My treatment methods

EMDR

I have been trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which I incorporate into my practice to help clients process and resolve trauma. Utilizing the structured eight-phase approach of EMDR, I guide clients through recalling distressing experiences while engaging in bilateral stimulation, known as guided eye movements. This process helps to desensitize the emotional impact of traumatic memories and reprocess them into more adaptive understandings. By integrating EMDR with other therapeutic modalities, I support clients in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and other trauma-related conditions, fostering healing and personal growth.

Trauma-Focused CBT

In my practice, I use TF-CBT to help clients process traumatic memories, develop coping strategies, and challenge distorted beliefs related to their experiences. Through a collaborative and structured approach, I work with clients to reduce trauma symptoms, enhance emotional regulation, and promote resilience, ultimately facilitating their journey towards recovery and improved mental health.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

I have significant experience with Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), which I utilize to help clients identify and build upon their existing strengths and resources to achieve their goals. SFT is a future-oriented, goal-directed approach that emphasizes finding practical solutions rather than focusing on problems. In my practice, I collaborate with clients to identify their desired outcomes, explore times when the problem was less severe or absent, and develop strategies to recreate those successful moments. By focusing on what works and fostering a sense of hope and agency, I support clients in making positive changes and achieving tangible results in a relatively short period. This approach is particularly effective for clients seeking quick and practical resolutions to specific challenges in their lives.
