Desirée Nwigwe
Hello, I’m Desirée, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based, and individualized mental health care. I bring more than 15 years of combined healthcare and nursing experience, including extensive work in acute medical care, emergency psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, and consultation-liaison psychiatry. This broad clinical background has equipped me to support individuals with concerns ranging from anxiety and depression to complex psychiatric and medical presentations with compassion, clinical expertise, and a calm, thoughtful approach. My approach is warm, collaborative, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and neurodiversity-affirming. I believe every person deserves to feel heard, respected, and understood, not defined by a diagnosis. I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, supportive therapy, patient education, and evidence-informed lifestyle interventions so clients feel informed and empowered throughout their treatment. I believe in shared decision-making and strive to create a therapeutic partnership where we work together to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your goals, values, and unique life experiences. For clients who desire it, I also welcome the thoughtful integration of faith and spirituality into treatment while honoring and respecting the beliefs, values, and identities of every individual I serve. Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, mood disorders, or significant life transitions, my goal is to help you build resilience, restore hope, and achieve meaningful, lasting emotional wellness. I believe every client has a story that deserves to be heard with compassion, not assumptions. My goal is to create a partnership where you feel understood, empowered, and actively involved in every decision about your mental health care.
First session
Beginning mental health treatment can feel overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to have questions or feel uncertain. My goal during our first appointment is to create a safe, welcoming environment where you feel comfortable sharing your story at your own pace. We’ll discuss what brings you to treatment, your current symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, previous medications and treatments, lifestyle, relationships, support system, and the goals you hope to accomplish. I also want to understand your strengths, values, cultural background, and, if important to you, your faith or spirituality. I believe you are the expert on your own experiences. My role is to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and use my clinical expertise to help identify the treatment approach that best fits your needs. Together, we’ll develop an individualized treatment plan that may include medication management, supportive therapy, coping strategies, lifestyle recommendations, or referrals when appropriate. I take time to explain diagnoses, medications, expected benefits, possible side effects, and treatment options so you can make informed decisions with confidence. My hope is that you leave your first appointment feeling heard, supported, and encouraged, with a clear understanding of our plan moving forward.
Strengths
I believe healing begins with a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust, compassion, and genuine understanding. My patients often describe me as approachable, thoughtful, thorough, and easy to talk to because I take time to truly listen before offering recommendations. Working in emergency psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, and consultation-liaison psychiatry has taught me to remain calm, compassionate, and solution-focused during life’s most difficult moments. Whether someone is experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, trauma, psychosis, or significant life stressors, I strive to create a space where they feel safe, respected, and never judged. I provide trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and neurodiversity-affirming care. I recognize that neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD and autism, experience the world differently, and I believe treatment should support each person’s strengths rather than force them into a one-size-fits-all approach. I also recognize that faith and spirituality can be meaningful sources of hope and resilience. For clients who desire it, I thoughtfully integrate their faith into treatment while continuing to provide evidence-based psychiatric care. At the same time, I warmly welcome clients of every background, culture, identity, and belief system. One of my greatest passions is patient education. I believe clients deserve to understand their diagnosis, medications, and treatment options so they can actively participate in their own care. My goal isn’t simply to prescribe medication, it’s to help people gain insight, build resilience, and create lasting improvements in their emotional well-being.
Ideal clients
I work best with individuals who are ready to better understand their mental health and actively participate in their treatment. Whether you are seeking care for the first time or returning after previous treatment, I strive to provide a supportive, collaborative environment where you feel heard and respected. I enjoy working with adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, trauma-related concerns, stress, life transitions, and other mental health conditions. I also enjoy working with neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD and autism, by providing neurodiversity-affirming care that recognizes each person’s unique strengths and needs. My ideal clients are those seeking thoughtful psychiatric evaluation, medication management, education, and a personalized treatment plan. For clients who desire it, I am also happy to thoughtfully incorporate faith and spirituality into treatment while providing compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care.
Treatment methods
Supportive
Supportive Therapy Supportive therapy is integrated into every visit. I provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can discuss life’s challenges, process emotions, strengthen coping skills, and build resilience. My goal is to help clients feel heard, supported, and empowered while working collaboratively toward meaningful improvements in their mental health and overall quality of life.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing I use motivational interviewing to help clients explore their goals, strengthen their own motivation for change, and build confidence in taking meaningful steps toward improved mental health. Rather than telling clients what they should do, I work collaboratively with them to identify what matters most and develop realistic, achievable goals.
Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma-Informed Care I recognize that past experiences can significantly influence emotional well-being and mental health. My approach emphasizes safety, compassion, respect, collaboration, and empowerment while avoiding judgment or assumptions. Every treatment plan is individualized to meet each client’s unique needs and experiences.
Psychoeducation
Medication is one part of a comprehensive treatment plan, not the entire approach. I work collaboratively with clients to determine whether medication is appropriate based on their symptoms, goals, medical history, and personal preferences. I take time to clearly explain diagnoses, treatment options, expected benefits, possible side effects, lifestyle factors, and coping strategies. My goal is to help clients feel informed, empowered, and actively involved in their care while using the simplest and lowest effective medication regimen to support long-term wellness.
Faith-based therapy
My Christian faith shapes the way I care for others; with compassion, grace, humility, and respect. I strive to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard and understood. For clients who desire it, I can incorporate Scripture, prayer, biblical principles, and faith-centered discussions alongside evidence-based psychiatric care. I also help clients recognize that emotional struggles are not personal failures but often understandable responses to stress, life experiences, or mental health conditions. Together, we work to reduce shame and self-criticism, strengthen self-compassion, restore hope, and develop healthier ways of coping.
