Sarah Kelly

LPC (she/her)18 years of experience

Hi, I'm Sarah! I hold an undergraduate degree in Education and a graduate degree in Holistic Mental Health Counseling. I’ve spent over 23 years working in higher education, including teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in Psychology and Clinical Counseling. Alongside my academic work, I’ve had the privilege of practicing in a wide range of clinical settings, including residential treatment, outpatient agencies, a hospital emergency department, and as a clinical counselor with Youth Pride Inc. For the past 10 years, I’ve been in private practice alongside my career in higher ed. My work is deeply influenced by mindfulness and contemplative traditions, with inspiration from teachers such as Thich Nhat Hanh, Jack Kornfield, Eckhart Tolle, John Kabat-Zinn, and Michael Mahoney, although I think you may find me more friendly and direct (like a teacher-mentor-counselor) than a meditation teacher. I’ve completed training in CBT, DBT, Hakomi Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy. I am certified in herbalism through Rosemary Gladstar and am I certified Master Naturalist through UMD extension, and believe the outdoors holds many keys to health and healing. I do this work because I’ve experienced firsthand how powerful it can be to be met with understanding, care, and support during difficult seasons of life. Others have helped me along the way, and my work as a therapist is, in many ways, about passing that care forward—creating a space where people feel seen, respected, and supported as they find their own path toward healing and change.

First session

In our first session, we’ll spend time getting to know each other. I’ll review your intake with you, learn a bit about your background, and explore what’s bringing you to therapy right now. We’ll talk about what you’d like to work on, how you hope your life might look or feel different, and what feels most important to you at this point. I’ll also review client rights and responsibilities so you feel clear and informed moving forward. I’ll share a little about my background and approach to therapy, and you’re welcome to ask any questions or share any concerns along the way. This first session is very much a meet-and-greet—there’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready to, and my goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable, heard, and supported from the start!

Strengths

Clients often tell me that what stands out most about our work together is how genuinely non-judgmental the space feels. While therapy is meant to be judgment-free, many people share that they feel especially un-judged with me—able to show up as they are, without pressure to be different before they’re ready. I don’t push an agenda or try to force change. Instead, I meet people where they are and work collaboratively, honoring their pace and inner wisdom. I believe that real change happens not through pressure or resistance, but through understanding and alignment. Much like in physics—where force creates an equal and opposite reaction—going with what’s already present is often the surest path to growth. This approach helps clients feel safe, supported, and empowered to move forward in ways that feel authentic and sustainable.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone seeking clarity, relief, or direction as they navigate a challenging season of life. They may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of their next steps, and want a space where they can understand themselves more deeply. In our work together, we explore barriers with curiosity and compassion while building practical skills for growth. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Hakomi Therapy, and Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), and my background in Holistic Counseling to support clients in developing confidence, insight, and meaningful change.

Treatment methods

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a recognized and highly respected evidence-based treatment, which includes learning skills in four subsets: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Originally and successfully used with people who have Borderline Personality Disorder, it is now shown to also be effective in those with other mental health disorders, including anxiety & depression. I am a firm believer that ALL people can benefit from the skill set this treatment teaches, and have witnessed real and positive change happen for my clients! I have trained in DBT with PESI and with Marielle Berg and Ed Fowler, hosts of the Skillful Podcast.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) absolutely teaches that our minds can be rational, even though we're naturally prone to irrational thinking; CBT helps you identify distorted, unhelpful thoughts (like "musts," "shoulds") and actively replace them with more balanced, realistic, and logical "rational" ones, leading to healthier emotions and behaviors. It's about understanding your thought-feeling-behavior link and learning to challenge the negative stories your mind tells you to find better interpretations of reality.
