Jodie Spradlin

LMSW-C (she/her)10 years of experience

Hello and welcome! My name is Jodie Spradlin and I am a licensed clinical social worker in Michigan. I’m so happy that you reached out for help. It takes a brave person to come to therapy to address difficult thoughts, feelings and events and to change themselves, their thinking and behaviors. I'm here to assist you in sorting through the things that are difficult right now and to offer you a safe place to be open and honest without fear of judgment. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I am here to support & empower you on your journey of self-improvement and better mental health. Together, we will explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviors and will come up with solutions and coping skills that improve your life, yourself and your mental health. I have both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work with a minor in psychology. I have over 10 years of experience helping clients with issues such as: anxiety and panic attacks, depression, motivation, self-esteem and confidence issues, addictions, family and relationship conflicts, divorce and separation, LGBTQIA+ issues, trauma and abuse, communication problems, grief and loss, forgiveness, guilt and shame, anger management, alternative sex culture/BDSM/kink, polyamory/non-monogamous relationships, sexual dysfunction, infidelity, money and financial issues, and workplace issues. I also do a lot of relationship coaching with my clients, as well as couples counseling. Regarding my personal life, I am an older pansexual woman who is the proud mother of 3 wonderful young adult sons and 2 beautiful grandsons. I love spending time with my loved ones, music, singing, laughing, watching TV and movies, cats, horseback riding and rollerskating.

First session

In our first session, my focus is on getting to know you - what brings you to therapy, what you're hoping for, and what's felt hard or painful lately. I'll ask some gentle questions to better understand your history, your strengths, and any goals you have for our work together. You can expect a compassionate space where all parts of you are welcome, and there's no pressure to share more than you're ready to share. It's the beginning of a collaborative process, where we move at your pace. I want clients to feel supported, heard and understood right from the start. You, your experiences and emotions are valid.

Strengths

With over 10 years of experience in the field, I use techniques and exercises from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the Gottman Method, and Solution-Focused Therapy. I have struggled myself with anxiety and depression so I understand not only clinically but personally how these mental health conditions can have such a negative impact in life. I think my own struggles and experiences better help me in understanding and relating to the clients I am so fortunate to serve.

Ideal clients

I have over 10 years of experience helping clients with issues such as: anxiety and panic attacks, depression, motivation, self-esteem and confidence issues, addictions, family and relationship conflicts, divorce and separation, LGBTQIA+ issues, identity issues, transgender issues, trauma and abuse, communication problems, grief and loss, forgiveness, guilt and shame, anger management, alternative sex culture/BDSM/kink, polyamory/non-monogamous relationships, sexual dysfunction, infidelity, money and financial issues, and workplace issues. I also do a lot of relationship coaching with my clients, as well as couples counseling. My favorite areas to work on include anxiety, low self esteem, gay and transgender issues, and relationship coaching.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Our thoughts affect our mood and behavior, so we will often examine thoughts and feelings in order to improve mood and self-confidence and to make better choices that help us achieve our goals. It's often not events themselves that cause us distress but our thoughts about those events. Remember, not all of our thoughts are true. We don't have to believe all of our thoughts. These are some concepts we'll work on together.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps people stop struggling with difficult thoughts and feelings, accept them as part of life, and focus on taking meaningful actions that align with their values. ACT teaches people to make room for uncomfortable emotions instead of fighting them, become less controlled by negative thoughts, and build a life based on what matters most to them.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy helps people understand the different "parts" of themselves—such as an inner critic, a people-pleaser, or a wounded child—and build a compassionate relationship with those parts. Rather than trying to get rid of difficult thoughts or feelings, IFS helps people heal the underlying emotional wounds and respond from their calm, confident core Self.

Attachment-based

Attachment-Based Therapy helps people understand how their early relationships shaped the way they connect with others today. In therapy, we identify attachment patterns, heal relationship wounds, build emotional safety, and develop healthier, more secure ways of relating to yourself and the people in your life.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) helps people develop practical skills to manage intense emotions, cope with distress, improve relationships, and stay present in the moment. It combines acceptance of current experiences with learning new behaviors that support healthier, more effective ways of responding to life's challenges.
