I have worked in the mental health field for over 24 years. I worked as a school psychologist, instructor, therapist, and mindfulness based educator. The results I have seen in working with clients struggling with trauma, addiction, anxiety, and depression have been so fulfilling! It is so exciting to watch people grow in their awareness, gaining insight into issues that they may have doubted would ever occur, healing old emotional wounds.
During the first session with clients, it is important that they feel comfortable and heard. I encourage clients to ask questions and express their needs and expectations of the therapy process. Clients are almost always a little anxious, not knowing what to expect so my goal for the first session is to help clients feel at ease and comfortable.
Authenticity. My clients understand that I am a human being who has struggled in life, too! Compassion is the other strength which is just natural to me. It is so important for clients to know that they are in a judgment free zone and are supported while they deal with very emotionally upsetting issues. I usually laugh a lot with clients as well, helping maintain some levity when needed.
Clients I work well with are people who are ready to awaken to their mental health and begin the healing process. Awakening spiritually is not based on religious beliefs, but allows people to understand that they are innately good and have all the resources they have ever needed within themselves. Changing thoughts can truly change our lives!
My experience in using a Mindfulness-Based approach in therapy sessions has been so rewarding! My role is as a guide/educator to assist people with tapping into their own mental health using awareness as the key component. As this approach as the basic foundation in achieving a higher level of consciousness, it allows me to integrate other successful interventions such as EMDR, EFT, and meditation.
I received EMDR training in 2002 and have been utilizing this technique since that time. It is indescribable to witness the amazing shift in clients' awareness and moving through the extreme negative impacts of trauma in particular, which can be anything! It's like watching a miracle happen before your eyes!
Positive Psychology aligns with my therapeutic approach to understanding how Mind, Consciousness, and Thought create our moment to moment reality or emotional experience. It promotes the understanding that all people have mental health, however we just need help at times to unlock it.
I was certified in REBT in 1999 after completing a practicum with the Albert Ellis Institute. I found this to be a very practical approach to therapy and it also aligns with the principles of mind, consciousness, and thought very well.
I teach weekly classes on trauma informed care at the residential treatment facility where I also work. I have taught this class for several years and love it! It is interesting to explain how the brain processes and stores trauma and the body, too!
