Jennifer Wiskochil
My path to becoming a mental health provider began with a deep interest in understanding people, trauma, resilience, and emotional well-being. I earned my BA and MSW before becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Virginia. Over the past 20 years, I have worked in community mental health, crisis intervention, PSR, residential services, case management, and outpatient psychotherapy with individuals experiencing trauma, serious mental illness, substance use, grief, and life transitions. My approach is holistic, person-centered, trauma-informed, and grounded in genuine human connection, compassion, curiosity, and humor.
First session
Our first session is really about getting to know each other. I’ll want to hear what brought you to therapy, what’s been going on in your life, and what you’d like to be different. You don’t need the right words or to know exactly what your goals are yet—we can figure that out together. My goal is for you to leave the first session feeling heard, comfortable, and hopeful that therapy can be a space where you can be yourself. We’ll also start identifying your strengths and a few practical ways to move toward what matters to you.
Strengths
In sessions, I bring compassion, curiosity, honesty, and humor. I’m person-centered and trauma-informed, but I also believe therapy should feel like a real conversation. I’ll meet you where you are, help you explore what’s getting in the way, challenge you when it’s helpful, and support you in finding what works for you.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is ready—or at least curious about—understanding themselves a little better. You don’t need to have everything figured out or even know exactly what you want from therapy. You may be dealing with trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, major life changes, or simply feeling stuck. I enjoy working with people who are open to honest conversations, reflection, and trying new ways of looking at things. I’ll meet you where you are, bring compassion and humor when appropriate, and work alongside you to create meaningful change at your own pace.
Treatment methods
Person-centered (Rogerian)
My primary therapy method is person centered/humanistic. Humanistic therapy starts with the belief that you know yourself better than anyone else, and the therapist helps you uncover your own strengths, answers, and direction. As your therapist, I focus on you as a whole person, not just your symptoms or diagnosis. It is based on the idea that people can grow, heal, and make meaningful changes when they feel understood, accepted, and supported. Our sessions often involve exploring your feelings, experiences, relationships, values, and sense of identity. As your therapist, it is my job to provide a nonjudgmental space where you can be honest about what you are experiencing and better understand yourself. The goal is not simply to “fix” a problem. I Humanistic therapy helps you develop greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, confidence, and clarity about what you want from your life. Your relationship with your therapist is an important part of the process, and therapy tends to feel collaborative, genuine, and conversational.
