LCSW, 12 years of experience
Healing is not always found in a linear path. With every new experience we encounter there is the potential and opportunity for change. Hi, I'm Mayra, thank you for taking the time to considering me as a companion in your therapy journey. Therapy can be a challenge for some people so I like to provide gentle guidance. There is no single way of conducting therapy- everyone needs different approaches, resources and therapeutic support. I strive to help create a safe space for people to explore their identity (cultural, familial, sexual, etc). I have worked in the medical field for almost 20 years in different roles. This has allowed me to gain different perspectives and have a better understanding of the medical community. Having been part of this community has allowed me to serve patients, caregivers, first responders and medical professionals. Most of my adulthood has been spent in Austin and the Hill Country. I am a bilingual first-generation Texan and I’m happy to call Central Texas home. However, I was born and raised in South Texas and la frontera (the borderlands) is also very much part of my identity. I find that our cultures and family of origin at times play a role in how we choose to carry our experiences and expectations.
The first session is about getting to know you. We may awkwardly make a little small talk about something random for a little bit. There is no rush. This is where we will get an idea on whether we can hold a conversation. In this first visit we will also identify session frequency, different modalities that we can explore moving forward and booking your second session. Most clients will know between their 1st to 3rd session if we are a good match.
My therapeutic strengths come forth when clients are in the midst of processing and adjusting to various transitions in life (growing relationships, aging, divorce, family roles, mental health or medical diagnosis). I am curious, interactive and ready to help create a clearer image. Something unique I would like to share is that I enjoy using bibliotherapy and creative arts in my treatment.
Clients that may be a good fit are the ones that these themes stand out for: Latinx, LGBTQ, medical issues, women's health, fertility struggles, chronic disease, sexual dysfunction and family of origin dynamics.
Acceptance and commitment therapy is a modality that can help establish a trusting and supportive therapeutic relationship. In my practice I strive to expose clients to the many helpful facets of ACT.
In my experience DBT helps so many people who are struggling to regulate their emotions. I like to evaluate and focus on a way to help my clients manage emotions, reduce self-destructive behaviors, and build a life worth living.
I aim to provide understandable information about mental health conditions and treatment options that we can explore in our sessions. It can be quite helpful to have a space to promote self- care, develop coping mechanisms and identifying support systems.

I've worked with Mayra for four years, and she's been very thoughtful about helping me to revise my therapy goals over time. She's very flexible, authentic, and asks really helpful questions.
