New to Grow
I am an optimist that has worked in the mental health and substance use space since 2007 as both a clinician and music therapist. Most battles are won and lost before they are ever fought because our thoughts drive our feelings and affect our behaviors. The challenge becomes mastering our thought process. Figuring out "who" we are is more useful than "why" we are so important in our journey to overcoming challenges, being resilient and becoming who we want to be. I thoroughly enjoy exploring and cultivating holistic coping strategies and firmly believe everything is better with music and chocolate.
The first session will be an exploration of "needs". What are they looking for? What do they want to achieve? What do they want to change? Why this? Why now (motivation to change)?
Many positive and negative life experiences over the years have shaped who I am. I cannot change those experiences but did and continue to learn from them. My self-awareness, self-perception, perception of the world and people around me are all "part of me". I learned to accept that to identify my strengths and struggles and coping strategies that work for me. We can evaluate whatever you bring with you, figure out what you need to keep, vs. what no longer serves you in this season of your life.
Adults, especially women addressing life transitions including career, children going off to college/moving out, marriage/divorce, or facing chronic illness that affect their quality of life. Clients that have a desire to improve their quality of life and motivated to change. Adults that realize they cannot change their past but are still willing to move forward to create the best present and future. Clients willing to put in the work
Other specialties
I identify as
Mind-body approach
Experience and training in MBSR including body scan, breathwork, mindfulness. Routinely incorporate breathwork, grounding, tai chi/qigong and exploratory movement in practice settings. Our bodies physically manifest trauma and stress. The mind-body approach directly stimulates the nervous system in an attempt to soothe the distress and regulate our emotions. I use breath and movement to empower clients to learn to rself-soothe, regulate their own emotions and manage their own stressors.
Trauma Informed Care
Formal training in trauma-informed care working with adults in the domestic violence, PTSD, abuse arena. I always incorporate the basic elements of trauma-informed care into my practice as a whole. Trauma is individually experienced and so is everyone's response even when experienced in early childhood. The definition of "trauma" is very broad, and everyone has experienced some trauma in their lives. Our past experiences shape our resilience, decision-making and problem-solving skills and how we navigate the world around us.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to challenge negative/distorted beliefs and thoughts during sessions. Client ultimately learns and cultivates the skill to breaking the cycle of negative thinking. This is the initial step to identifying, managing and regulating emotions which in term can modify behaviors. We identify and explore types of thought distortions as part of the learning process.
