A Florida native, I am currently in Pensacola, Florida. My practice is mainly online, with evening and weekend sessions available. I find that evenings and weekends are easier for most to fit into their schedules. The times I have listed in my calendar are available, but if there is a better time during the evenings or weekends, I can be flexible. I have worked with clients of all ages and backgrounds, having worked for over 18 years. My experience includes providing caring and effective solution-focused therapy to clients struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, relationship issues, chronic conditions, and life transitions. My therapeutic approach draws from Rogerian therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy. I also provide clinical hypnosis (if appropriate), and mindfulness practices to help clients gain insight and make positive changes. My objective is to work these techniques into a seamless conversation, a conversation with a specific purpose. During our collaboration we will define your goals, determine what works for you, specifically, and reinforce the new skills to make the changes last.
Our first session is an interview. You interviewing me to see if I am someone who is capable to help you in the way that you need to be helped. I am interviewing you to see if we can work together. I am gathering background information and evaluating your situation, to see if I can be of help based on my training and experience. It should feel like a conversation as we build rapport and a therapeutic alliance. The relationship between you and your counselor is one of the most important aspects of therapy and the first session is the stepping stone to finding out if the relationship can be beneficial to you.
My strengths as a counselor include circuitous route it took me to get her. I was in the military for several years, which allowed me to travel extensively and experience multiple cultures and gain new perspectives. Following the military I worked in the prison setting for quite a while. During that time I learned to diagnose, treat, and work with clients that most of my contemporaries will never experience. I was able to work with many superb psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists as well as physicians learning the interplays between physical and mental health. I have worked in the school district with children from 5 to 21 years of age with varying issues, from relational issues with parents to significant trauma. The experience I bring to the sessions allows me to view issues from multiple perspectives while trying to find skills that are ideally suited for the client with which I am working.
Ideally, my client is motivated to make a change in their life, or find ways to adapt to new situations. I have worked with children as young as 6 years old all the way to geriatric issues. I find that all are capable of making needed changes in their lives, but some are more motivated. I can assist with some of the motivation for therapy. Getting started is most often one of the hardest parts of the therapeutic process. I will be there to help you explore and refine your goals and then, together, we will find the best skills to help you meet that goal.
Currently certified with T.E.A.M.-CBT from Dr. D. Burns' Feeling Good Institute. This and the Rogerian, person-centered, approach are the cornerstones of my practice.
I have completed the basic and advanced hypnotherapy courses provided by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, through the Florida Society of Clinical Hypnosis. I have seen much success with clients who have been given the fountain for change through various modalities. While this approach is not suitable for all clients, it can be discussed as a possible modality.
The theory from Carl Rogers has been of interest to me since studying his theory in college. His approach that all clients have value and deserve unconditional positive regard is a cornerstone of my practice.
