Kristina Rowshan
Hi, I’m a licensed social worker who works with adults navigating anxiety, stress, and life transitions. I aim to create a warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you can feel heard and understood. I began my career as a peer specialist and recovery coach, and I continue to bring a strong person-centered, strengths-based approach into my work. I am also grounded in the liberation health model, which means I consider how cultural, environmental, and systemic factors shape our experiences, not just what is happening internally. I have experience working with individuals living with HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ+ clients, and people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. As the daughter of an immigrant, I especially value working with immigrant communities and individuals navigating bicultural identities. Outside of work, I enjoy watching Real Housewives (I’ve seen every franchise), spending time with my cat, and going on walks around the city.
First session
In our first session, we will review confidentiality and discuss what therapy with me will look like. I will ask questions to better understand your background, current concerns, and goals as part of a psychosocial assessment. At the same time, we will move at your pace. I understand that repeating your story to new providers can feel exhausting, and you are always in control of how much you choose to share. My goal is to balance gathering the information needed with creating a space where you feel comfortable and respected. I do not take a “blank slate” approach to therapy. I believe the therapeutic relationship is an important part of the work. If you have questions about me, you are welcome to ask. If there is something I do not feel comfortable sharing, I will let you know while still aiming to be present and genuine in our work together.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths is balancing warmth with structure. I strive to create a space where you feel supported while also helping you build practical tools you can use in your daily life. My approach is skill-based and draws from evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Seeking Safety, and CAMS. I am also comfortable working with clients who feel stuck, unsure, or ambivalent, and supporting them in building clarity and momentum over time.
Ideal clients
I work best with adults who are open to change, including those who may feel unsure or ambivalent about what that change looks like. I support individuals experiencing anxiety, stress, mood-related concerns, and life transitions, with a focus on building practical coping skills. I also work well with individuals navigating identity, cultural expectations, and bicultural experiences. I have experience supporting clients with more complex mental health needs, as well as those navigating substance use, relationship challenges, and other areas where they may feel stuck or conflicted.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I support clients in identifying unhelpful thinking patterns and developing more balanced ways of thinking, while also building practical coping skills they can use in daily life. My approach is collaborative and tailored to each client’s goals.
Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS)
I use Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality to work collaboratively with clients experiencing suicidal thoughts. This approach focuses on understanding the underlying drivers of distress and creating an individualized plan for safety and support. It emphasizes transparency, collaboration, and empowerment in treatment.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills to help clients manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and cope with stress. I focus on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. I balance validation with skill-building to support meaningful change.
Motivational Interviewing
I use Motivational Interviewing to help clients explore ambivalence and strengthen motivation for change. My approach is client-centered and nonjudgmental, supporting clients in identifying their own goals and building confidence in their ability to make changes.
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
I incorporate Solution-Focused Brief Therapy to help clients identify strengths and build practical solutions. This approach focuses on what is working and supports clients in making meaningful progress through small, achievable steps.
