Joshua Tidwell
My goal as a counselor is simple: help people find freedom from the challenges that keep them feeling stuck. Throughout my career I've worked with individuals facing trauma, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, burnout, and significant life stressors. My experience includes private practice counseling, trauma systems therapy, and intensive behavioral health settings.
My experience includes private practice counseling, trauma systems therapy, and intensive behavioral health settings. Practical, trauma-informed counseling for adults, professionals, and men seeking lasting change.
I believe counseling should be both compassionate and practical. While understanding your story is important, therapy should also provide tools that help you navigate everyday life with greater confidence and resilience. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, burnout, relationship challenges, trauma, or major life transitions, my goal is to help you move toward lasting change.
First session
First session is an intake session. Usually 20 minutes to 50 minutes long, and will be where we understand what the treatment plan will look like for our time together. I want you to leave that session feeling comfortable and ready to get into the work deeper in session 2 where we will start to have 50-60 minute sessions.
Strengths
My personal experiences and journey through therapy have given me a deeper understanding of how family dynamics and early relationships can shape our attachment styles, self-worth, and emotional well-being. I bring this understanding into my work as a counselor by creating a safe, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard, supported, and empowered to explore their experiences. Together, we work to understand the underlying experiences and patterns that contribute to current struggles, while focusing on how the past continues to influence the present. My goal is to help clients develop greater self-awareness, challenge unhelpful patterns, and build healthier ways of relating to themselves and others so they can move forward with greater confidence, clarity, and emotional well-being.
Ideal clients
I believe counseling is most effective when you are ready to take an active role in your own growth, even if you are unsure where to begin. Sometimes, therapy starts because someone else encouraged you to seek support, and that is okay, too. My hope is that, over time, you find your own reasons for being here and begin to see the value in the work we do together. My approach to counseling is collaborative: I will bring my support, guidance, and professional expertise, but meaningful change happens when we work together as a team. I will walk alongside you, help you navigate challenges, and encourage you to keep moving forward, but I won't do the work for you. If you're willing to show up, explore your experiences, and put in the effort, I'm ready to meet you there. You don't have to do it alone. Let's work together to help you build the life you want.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
ACT is a type of therapy that helps you develop a healthier relationship with your thoughts and feelings so they have less control over your life. Rather than trying to eliminate every difficult emotion or thought, ACT teaches you how to make room for those experiences while choosing actions that align with your personal values. The goal isn't to avoid discomfort or feel happy all the time. It's to help you live a meaningful life, even when anxiety, stress, painful memories, or uncertainty show up.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help with anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, and patterns of thinking or behaving that make life more difficult. Through CBT, you can learn to: - Recognize unhelpful thought patterns and understand how they influence your emotions and actions. - Challenge negative beliefs and develop more balanced, realistic perspectives. - Break cycles that keep you stuck, such as overthinking, avoidance, or self-criticism. - Build practical coping skills to manage stress and navigate difficult situations. - Make meaningful changes by practicing healthier responses in everyday life.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
Person-Centered Therapy is a humanistic approach to counseling that emphasizes the importance of feeling heard, understood, accepted, and respected. It recognizes that you are the expert on your own experiences and that meaningful growth can happen when you have a safe space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and challenges without fear of judgment. The goal is to help you develop greater self-awareness, build self-trust, and discover your own path toward growth and change.
Faith-based therapy
Christian faith-based counseling integrates psychological principles and therapeutic techniques with Christian faith and values. It offers a space where clients can explore emotional struggles, relationships, life challenges, and personal growth while incorporating their spiritual beliefs into the counseling process. This approach recognizes that faith can be an important source of hope, strength, meaning, and guidance. Counseling can incorporate prayer, Scripture, and spiritual reflection when desired by the client, while respecting each person's individual beliefs, experiences, and relationship with God.
