Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

William gets to know the client in the first session, after client safety and confidentiality are confirmed. William shares his approach and matches the pacing of the client. The first session and subsequent sessions last around 50 minutes, and each session builds on previous sessions. A strong, trusting therapeutic relationship is the goal during the first and following sessions. The client is the subject matter expert in their own journey, and William brings the professional therapeutic tools to assist them towards wholeness. William is attentive to emails and messages between sessions. If requested by the client, William - an ordained minister, will offer a prayer for the client.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

William listens carefully to first hear the client's story and see where they are on their journey. Once needs are determined and reasons for therapy, William reaches for the best therapeutic tools in his health tool kit to use with the client to help the client set and reach goals for therapy. William has a deep respect for the unique cultures and diverse backgrounds of his clients, and is careful to show that respect as it applies to therapy. Sessions are confidential and professional and client focused. There is a check on progress each session. Between sessions, William may email extra resources or optional worksheets to help the client. William's rich, diverse professional experience in the military, homeless populations, churches, children's home, community resource agencies, senior adult, LGBTQ+, Veteran and medical communities provide him with 30 years experience in counseling and caring for the widest variety of people navigating life's challenges. He is ready and willing to hear YOUR story and help you navigate the challenges YOU are facing today.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is someone who feels STUCK in their life. It could be they have transitioned from the military or first responder career, or perhaps they have struggled to find peace emerging from dysfunctional families of origin or relationships. My ideal client is serious about working toward their own goals to get better. They may or may not be spiritual or religious but since I am an ordained Christian minister, have been an Army Chaplain for 15 years, and a professional social worker for 15 years before that, I have a wealth of experience and tools I can use to come alongside my clients and help them reach their goals.

My treatment methods

Couples Counseling

I use Emotional Focused Therapy, Couples Collaborative and others to help with deep level communication and conflict resolution.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I help clients get out of that "stinking thinking" rut that keeps them down and holds them back from living the life they really want to.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

I have used SFBT for more than 15 years and can help individuals, couples and families set realistic SMART Goals and reach them. Each session builds on the successes of the previous work. This is the primary method I used for 15 years as an Active-Duty Army Chaplain.

Strength-Based

I focus on what my clients have going RIGHT for them and like a seed into a garden, we water and nurture it until it grows into much success for the client. I am a systems-oriented therapist, so I like to explore with my clients their "family tree" and their families of origin using genograms to help them discover where they get certain traits and behaviors from and how to set health boundaries in their own families.

EMDR

When a client with significant trauma is seeking healing from an incident or events that have come to cause a block in the client's progress towards healing and wholeness, EMDR can be used as a option which helps the client revisit the traumatic event in a safe environment of the therapy session to process it and reduce the negative effects it seems to hold over the client.
