Jamie Van Voorhis
I got my undergraduate degree in psychology and graduate degree in social work from Ohio State University, and have been working as a therapist for 7 years. I have worked in inpatient psychiatric hospital, residential treatment center, and private practice settings. When I'm not working, I love to travel, spend time with friends and family, and explore Columbus! Go bucks
First session
In the first session, I like to get a good picture of what your life looks like right now in the present moment, and what struggles you might have or areas you want to focus on in therapy. I also like to start learning about your past history and what events from your past might contribute to the present.
Strengths
I would say I have a laid back approach and I do like to let clients guide what topics we cover and how we approach them. If a certain style I'm using is not working then I'm happy to explore what else might work for the client if it's in my wheelhouse. I am strengths based and like to point on the successes clients have had whenever possible.
Ideal clients
I specialize in helping adults navigate anxiety, trauma, impulsivity, addictive behaviors and tendencies, struggles with self esteem and body image, and relationship issues and conflict. I want you to trust and understand yourself better. I can also offer support through challenging life transitions and big decisions that might be weighing on you. My biggest goal is for you to feel in control of your emotions/behaviors and build overall confidence and self esteem.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I think it's helpful to observe our emotions and experiences without judgment, from a neutral perspective, so that we can learn more about where they come from and how to challenge/change them if needed.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Sometimes it's easier to identify problematic behaviors in our lives first. So if we start with the behavior, we can then back up to the emotion that came before it and the thought that came before that to process those further in therapy.
EMDR
Once thoughts and emotions that have been contributing to behaviors are identified, EMDR can be utilized to further process these thoughts and find their origins.
