Hello and welcome! My name is Emily Adams and I'm a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).. Let's acknowledge the courage it took for you to make the first step towards your mental health goals. Well done! I believe in supporting goal progress through a collaborative, person-centered method. Which holds the understanding that integrating a person’s individual's strengths, self awareness and cultural identity are essential in making progress towards their unique goals for therapy. I focus on creating a warm, supportive, nonjudgmental environment for individuals to feel comfortable, safe and heard.

First session

Our first session will be mostly me getting to know more about you, sharing more about my approach, and answer any questions you may have. It's helpful in the initial session to get some background about your life and symptoms you can choose how much or little you share. From this initial meeting we can create goals we will work on in therapy and schedule our next session.

Strengths

I take a Eclectic approach in therapy sessions- utilizing various best practice modalities to best support a person’s needs. Some of the approaches I use are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills, Solution Focused Therapy, ADDRESSING model, Motivational Interviewing and body based regulation tools such as mindfulness and yoga.

Ideal clients

I work best with people that have a desire and drive to work on their mental health goals. As long as you are willing to do deep thinking, practice skills and be open to feedback, I can take it from there. Diagnoses I have worked most with are depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use CBT when helping people see thought patterns that may be getting in the way of their goals, support people in identifying helpful skills and tools to use, problem solving and processing feelings and thoughts related to life events and experiences.

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

I believe cultural identity is important and a priority for me to be curious about. I use a cultural identity lens in my practice, so I can support people's support people's values in the context of their beliefs and cultural practices. Being a Black-multiracial, cisgender, hetero, woman I understand how the intersections of our identities frame how we see and are seen in the world. It's necessary that integrate cultural identity in my practice to support the whole person.
