About me

My name is Jeffrey Yeom, and I'm a 1.5-generation Korean-American therapist. I believe one of our deepest human needs is to understand and to be understood. That's why I do this work: to help you realize you don't have to navigate life alone. My practice centers on decolonizing mental health, which means freeing you from values imposed by dominant culture so you can reconnect with what truly matters to you. I take time to learn your background, identity, and cultural world, then weave that understanding into rituals, traditions, and self-care practices that honor who you are. Together, we'll explore the emotions that point toward your truest values and gently rewrite patterns that no longer serve you. I work from an emotion-focused, attachment-based, and psychodynamic approach. In my sessions, I invite you to show up exactly as you are. We'll explore the relationships and experiences that have shaped you with curiosity, compassion, and without judgment. If you're looking for a space where your whole story can belong, I hope you reach out. Many of my clients carry stories shaped by migration, acculturation, or family expectations. You're not alone in navigating these.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

The first session is an intake where I'll ask in-depth questions about your background, culture, important relationships, and challenges faced today. This helps us get a fuller picture so we can start identifying goals or intentions for our work together. There's no pressure to share everything at once as trust and vulnerability take time, and finding the right fit is too.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I bring relatability, compassion, and empathy to each session, along with a genuine curiosity about who you are. I ask thoughtful questions not to lead you somewhere, but to help you discover what's already inside you. When tears come, I won't reach for a tissue right away. That's not because your emotions don't deserve care, it's because they deserve to be fully felt. Emotions processed in the room are less likely to show up unexpectedly later, in moments when you're reacting instead of responding to what matters to you.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I work well with individuals who grew up in immigrant households; people who may have felt caught between two worlds, never quite fitting into either. Many are former parentified children who learned to suppress their needs to keep peace at home. These early lessons often shape adult relationships with themselves, leading to struggles with confidence, persistent anxiety, or depression. You don't need to have it all figured out to begin therapy, but you do need to be willing to show up, to explore honestly, and to be open to change. That willingness is what makes the work possible. Together, we'll heal the tension between self-care and family harmony, so you can honor yourself without losing the connections that matter. This work takes courage, but you won't have to carry it alone.

My treatment methods

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Suppressed, repressed, and invalidated feelings and emotions live underneath the surface. They don't just go away! It causes us to react to a situation in a way that isn't true to who we are or who we want to grow to be. I help clients to explore, to process, and to change how they have interacted with these feelings and emotions. This process involves identifying important relationships, unpacking the meanings that clients have made from these important bonds, and creating a different way of interaction to live more aligned with true values and beliefs.

Attachment-based

The relationship we have with our parents/guardians sets a foundation for how we expect new relationships (friendships including) to be. Depending on how we related to our parents/guardians, we create a lot of meaning i.e. "I should never bring up my feelings or else I will get in trouble". This type of meaning making can dictate how we act and react when in relationships with other people. By exploring and unpacking your previous relationships, we can reframe and create new meanings to be aligned with your current values, rather than letting the past dictate our every move.
