Hello, my name is Patricia Palmer, and I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Michigan. I received my master's degree from Siena Heights University in 2009. I have had the opportunity to help children up to adults who might be struggling to overcome difficulties. My hope is to assist each client to achieve their truest potential.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, then dive into the specific challenges you're facing, and background information. It helps to have a history about problems, concerns, and/or family members with the same challenges. All of this will help me create a plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions. Therapy can be scary or intimidating for some people, we don't have to talk about anything you are worried about sharing on the first visit, but hope that in time, you will feel comfortable enough to open up.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have been working for 14 years and have learned to work with various clients. I like to use techniques from many different evidenced based practices that can be tailored to fit each person.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT is a type of interpersonal talk therapy that is very useful for managing your problems by changing the way you think and behave. This can be applied to multiple concerns and in fact is useful for the majority of mental health issues. I am certified in Trauma Focussed CBT in which this is applied to traumatic event processing.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

DBT is a type of evidenced-based talk therapy. It was developed as an extension of CBT with a stronger focus on acceptance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships. Some main components of this practice are mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a humanistic, evidence-based approach to psychotherapy, drawing primarily from attachment theory to facilitate the creation of secure, vibrant connection with self and others. It’s effective in treating individuals, couples, and families, addressing a wide range of issues from marital distress to individual anxiety and trauma.

Humanistic

Humanistic therapy, also known as humanism, is a form of talk therapy that focuses on a person’s individual nature, rather than assuming that groups of people with similar characteristics have the same concerns.

Interpersonal

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited, focused, and evidence-based approach to treat mood disorders. The main goal of IPT is to improve the quality of a client’s interpersonal relationships and social functioning, it aims to help reduce overall distress. IPT provides strategies to resolve problems within four key areas. It addresses interpersonal deficits, including social isolation or involvement in unfulfilling relationships. It can help patients manage unresolved grief—if the onset of distress is linked to the death of a loved one, either recent or past. IPT can help with difficult life transitions like retirement, divorce, or a move. IPT is recommended for dealing with interpersonal disputes that emerge from conflicting expectations between partners, family members, close friends, or coworkers.
