Hi, I’m Joe. I’ve worked in the mental health field for 26 years across substance use treatment, outpatient care, and hospital settings. I’ve supported individuals and families through crisis, transition, and long-term growth. I work well with teens, young adults, adults, and families who are navigating stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, substance use, or major life changes. I also have extensive experience working with men who may struggle to express emotions directly and instead feel stuck in withdrawal, irritability, or self-doubt. As a veteran, I understand the mindset and pressures that can come with military life. Across all of my work, I aim to provide a grounded, steady presence where honesty, insight, and meaningful change can take place.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
The first session is about understanding your story. We’ll talk through what brought you in, what feels most urgent, and what you would like to see change. I’ll ask questions about your background, relationships, stressors, and strengths so I can get a full picture of what’s happening. We’ll also clarify your goals. Some clients come in with very specific objectives; others simply know they can’t keep going the way they are. Both are completely fine. Together, we’ll define what progress would look like for you and outline a plan that feels realistic and focused. If family members are involved, we can explore their perspectives and determine how they may participate in the process. I often work collaboratively with parents, partners, or support systems when it makes sense. You can expect transparency from me. I’ll explain why we’re using certain approaches, what the structure of therapy may look like, and how we’ll measure improvement. I aim to create a space where you feel both supported and challenged. By the end of the first appointment, you should have a clearer sense of direction and a better understanding of how we’ll move forward together.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
I’m genuinely enthusiastic about working with people excited for change because I see the immense possibilities for growth and transformation. Together, we’ll focus on understanding your unique challenges and identifying any obstacles that may be standing in your way. My goal is to help you make the connections necessary to move forward confidently. If you’re ready to take the next step toward solving your problems and embracing positive change, I encourage you to sign up for therapy with me. Life is tough enough.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
I’m best suited for clients who want a supportive guide to help navigate difficult emotions, build resilience, and move toward meaningful change. I work with adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 26, including those dealing with trauma, substance use, or family conflict. I’m especially effective with teens who need help identifying their goals and building motivation for change. I also support families by fostering open communication and helping create a more connected home environment. I work well with adults facing stress, crisis, or life transitions. My calm, collaborative approach helps clients feel supported while developing practical coping strategies. As a male therapist, I offer a grounding presence for those exploring boundaries, healthy relationships, or healing from past abuse. I’ve worked with many female survivors of sexual trauma and bring sensitivity and respect to that work. I support men dealing with identity anxiety, depression, and trauma—helping them understand how these emotions influence their reactions, particularly in family relationships. Many men express distress through withdrawal, irritability, or anger. I provide a nonjudgmental space to explore these patterns, build insight, and develop healthier ways of relating to others. As a veteran, I also understand the mindset and challenges that come with military life.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
In our sessions, we'll work together to identify and change those negative thought patterns and behaviors that may be holding you back. I’m here to help you challenge those thoughts and develop healthier coping strategies that feel right for you. Together, we’ll build your problem-solving skills, which can lead to better emotional regulation and a greater sense of well-being.
EMDR
I’ll work with you using EMDR to help process and resolve any distressing memories that may be affecting you. We’ll engage in guided eye movements while you focus on these memories, which helps stimulate your brain’s natural healing process. This approach allows us to reduce emotional distress and change how those traumatic experiences are stored and perceived.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
We’ll use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. This approach will help you manage your emotions, develop healthy coping strategies, and improve your relationships. In our sessions, we’ll focus on building skills in areas like distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. DBT is particularly effective for addressing emotional regulation issues, and I’m here to support you every step of the way on this journey.
Solution Focused Brief Treatment
Solution-Focused Therapy emphasizes your strengths and focuses on finding solutions rather than getting stuck in problems. Together, we’ll set goals, use scaling questions, and explore miracle questions to help identify and amplify positive changes in your life. This approach is really helpful because it promotes quick, practical resolutions and empowers you to envision and achieve the future you want. I’m excited to work with you on this journey!
Person-centered (Rogerian)
In our sessions, I’ll be using Person-Centered Therapy, which focuses on creating a non-judgmental and empathetic environment where you can truly feel understood and accepted. I’m here to offer active listening, unconditional positive regard, and empathy, which will allow you to explore your thoughts and feelings freely. This supportive space fosters self-discovery and personal growth, helping you connect more deeply with yourself.

I really enjoyed my first session. Questions were direct but open enough for me to express myself. I liked how we explained the "why" of therapy and the different strategies. He was also able to identify one of my main challenges relatively quickly based on my responses, he was easy to talk to, and I felt a good connection and had some relatability right away.
