Hi there! I’m Heather Brooks & I’m a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in CA, AZ, & OR. I practice from a place of authenticity; I know I haven’t figured life out yet, so I don’t expect you to have either. I enjoy working with adult individuals on a multitude of topics. I have a passion for working with grief, maternal care, infertility & the overall adjustment to being a new parent. I’ve known I would be in this career field since I had the opportunity to be a conflict resolution manager in the 3rd grade. Following that I volunteered for a trauma intervention program throughout high school, and in the following years I’ve worked in group homes, with the foster care system, inpatient facilities, correctional institutions, & maintaining a private practice. I continue doing therapy because it’s a truly magical thing to see the light turn back on in someone’s eyes. I also really enjoy the vibe I bring into sessions, as most clients resonate & feel more comfortable improving their ability to be more authentic.
Our intake session is where we’ll meet & review your intake paperwork. I’ll review your documents prior to our session & identify any additional questions I may have, or where some clarification could be helpful. I’ll review or inform you of the limits to confidentiality in our work together. The first session is always the scariest, I promise! I’m proud of you for making it this far. I look forward to our first session! You’ve got this!
I strive to cultivate a space where my clients have the opportunity & safety to be their most authentic selves; be that raw, ugly, good, bad, or indifferent. Most of us spend our whole day or lives changing masks between being a colleague, child, sibling, spouse, parent, friend, etc. Give yourself the freedom to come into sessions as you are, how you really are without any masks. I have a very honest communication style. I find a nice balance between being assertive & compassionate. I will likely push you to the brink of your comfort zone, but you can count on me to be there with you during the tough moments of growth. I also have a wonderful sense of humor & attempt to make our work together impactful with personality.
My methods are a little less conventional than most, but I receive positive feedback regarding the “razzle dazzle” I bring into our sessions. I’m a transparent therapist who understands & values the connection of the human experience. We’re all doing the best we can, with the resources currently available to us. While we’ll be predominately working from a Cognitive Behavioral approach, I will pull from a variety of modalities to best suit your individual needs. We’re a team on tackling new skills & strategies to improve the problematic areas you identify at the onset of therapy.
