About me

My name is Dr. Kristy Verma, and I’m a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC #13286) with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. I specialize in culturally responsive therapy, trauma-informed care, and identity work, particularly for individuals navigating cultural expectations. I created the Nurturing Voice Approach, a healing-centered framework that helps clients reclaim their voice and emotional well-being through self-affirmation, narrative work, and empowerment.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, I’ll take time to learn about you—what brings you to therapy, what you're hoping for, and what has or hasn’t worked in the past. We'll talk about what’s most important to you and begin creating a space that feels safe, affirming, and supportive. I’ll also explain how therapy works and answer any questions you may have.

The treatment methods and tools I utilize

I utilize a blend of trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches tailored to each client’s needs. My primary framework is the Nurturing Voice Approach, which integrates self-affirmation, emotional safety, and identity exploration. I also draw from narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based techniques to help clients process their experiences and build emotional resilience. A key part of my work includes fostering self-authorship, which empowers clients to redefine their stories, values, and identities on their own terms.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My greatest strength is that I am a lifelong learner. As an Indian (Hindu/Sikh) woman, I’ve come to deeply value the importance of cultural competence—not just in my career, but in my social, academic, and personal life. I continuously seek out education and skills to support children and families from diverse cultural backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, family systems, age groups, genders, and national origins. I also recognize and respect the differences between collectivist and individualistic cultural values that shape each client’s identity and experience.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My therapeutic approach blends narrative therapy, CBT, mindfulness, and trauma-informed practices. I honor each client’s lived experience and cultural background, and I center warmth, emotional safety, and collaboration in our work. I help clients gently challenge limiting beliefs, build self-trust, and find clarity in their personal stories. I typically work with adults and young adults who are navigating anxiety, trauma, life transitions, self-esteem issues, and acculturation stress. Many of my clients are first- or second-generation individuals seeking support in balancing cultural expectations with personal identity and growth. I’m especially comfortable working with clients experiencing emotional overwhelm, people-pleasing patterns, and burnout. I offer a calm, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space where clients can feel seen, heard, and supported. Sessions with me are warm, grounding, and collaborative—with room for both reflection and growth. I gently guide clients while empowering them to trust their own voice.

The comfort of not feeling judged for how I’m feeling or what I’m saying. Very helpful to find solutions during anxiety or depressive episodes. Overall very welcoming and the best therapist I’ve ever had.
