Hello and kudos for taking the first steps to improving your life. At times, life can sure be challenging, sometimes confusing and other times painful. So, taking the first step to a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. ‘Courage is not the absence of fear; courage is looking fear in the eyes as you walk on by.’ (Anonymous). My name is James and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Wisconsin and Iowa, with over 7 years of practice, and over 30 years related counseling expertise. I have experience in helping individuals, couples and families from many backgrounds. I am also a ‘Dad’ to three, beautiful and amazing, adult daughters; so (maybe) I am a veteran parent! I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, regardless of their background or station in life. Our talks will be in a judgement free zone, tailored to meet your unique and specific needs. I am here to listen and support you as best I can and look forward to talking with you on the teletherapy platform.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

What to expect during first session: your first session with me will be introductory, an “initial assessment” to discuss your challenges, current life and recent events and situations. It will be casual, but purpose driven. I will ask questions to understand you better; you will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. After the first session, we will both have the opportunity to consider what we talked about decide if a follow-up is a good idea. There is no obligation for a second session, although it is recommended. So let’s get started!

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

While therapy sessions with me will be informal, each session will also be purpose driven--designed to maximize the time we have towards the goals you have in mind. I also strive to provide encouragement and build hope through the use of Positive Psychology; we will build on the skills and strengths you already have, rather than focusing on the "problem," or what isn't working.

My treatment methods

Positive Psychology

When difficulties come our way in life, many will ask something like, "what do i do now? Where do I start? Positive psychology helps therapist and client start by considering and identifying good things, abilities, strengths already present. For example, if someone is experiencing grief for the first time, asking something like, "can you recall a really difficult time in your life? What did you learn through that experience?" Those "life lessons" can be a gold mine where existing resiliency can be used for the present challenges. So instead of starting with the problem, conflict, stress etc., I am always curious about what a person has already going well.
