Dr. Karen Courchaine
With over 30 years of experience as a licensed psychologist, I have worked with a wide variety of adults facing many different challenges and life circumstances. That experience has taught me that people are often stronger and more capable of change and growth than they realize, especially when they have the right support. I strive to help clients feel seen, understood, and empowered as they work toward healing, greater balance, and a more fulfilling life.
First session
The first session is a chance for us to begin getting to know each other and to talk about what has brought you to therapy at this point in your life. We will explore the concerns you are facing, any relevant background that may be helpful, and what you would like to work toward in treatment. I want the first session to feel supportive, comfortable, and grounded, so that you leave with a clearer sense of direction and what it may be like to work together.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is the combination of extensive clinical experience, a strong ability to listen carefully, understand complex emotional struggles, and offer both compassionate support and clear, constructive challenge when needed. My approach is collaborative, practical, and individualized, with the goal of helping each client gain insight, build resilience, and make meaningful progress in line with their own goals and values.
Ideal clients
I work primarily with adults and older adults, including those who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally burdened by life transitions, grief, anxiety, depression, relationship changes, care-giving responsibilities, trauma, or the challenges that come with aging. I have significant experience working with veterans and with clients affected by trauma and anxiety. Using an evidence-based approach, I help clients process difficult experiences, reduce distress, strengthen coping skills, and move toward greater healing and resilience.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to help clients notice the thought patterns that fuel anxiety, depression, and emotional distress, and to replace them with more, realistic, balanced, and helpful ways of thinking and coping.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps clients accept difficult internal experiences, step back from unhelpful thought patterns, and commit to values-based actions that support healing, psychological flexibility, and growth.
Cognitive Processing (CPT)
I use CPT to help clients process trauma, challenge stuck points, identify unhelpful trauma-related beliefs, and develop more balanced, compassionate, and empowering ways of understanding themselves and the world.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i)
CBT for Insomnia helps clients change the thought patterns and behaviors that disrupt sleep and build healthier habits for more restful, restorative sleep.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
I use Mindfulness-based therapy to help clients increase present moment awareness, reduce emotional reactivity, and develop greater calm, self-compassion, and resilience in the face of stress.
