Hello, I'm Alexis. I am the founder of Swimming out of Circles Counseling, LLC. My areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, chronic illness/terminal illness, relationship troubles/conflict, and adjustment disorders. My approach to therapy is primarily through a Systems Theory and Intersectionality lens. We, as humans, are more than a mental health diagnosis. During counseling, we will explore what else makes up your identity, what bigger societal structures impact you, and how this all intersects with one another. I find value in looking at the big picture of who you are, as a person, to assist in the development of coping skills and increasing your mental wellbeing. I currently am seeing adult clients for individual telehealth counseling. Seeking therapy can feel intimidating to some. I intend to create a safe, open space so growth and healing can be possible. I look forward to working with you.
In the first session, I will complete a biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment, review confidentiality, review instances when mandated reporting would need to occur, and identify your goals of what you are hoping to achieve after therapy is complete.
From my experience working in hospice and palliative care, I have gained knowledge specific to the emotional side of chronic illness. Examples of chronic illness include: cancer, COPD, heart failure, liver disease, chronic kidney disease (CKD), dementia, stroke, ALS, and Sickle Cell Disease. I have worked closely with the older adult population and also the families/caregivers of patients who have chronic illness or who have died. For families/caregivers, I have specific knowledge on caregiver fatigue/burnout and survivor's guilt. I am an advocate for collaborating with the other members of your health care team and can provide referrals for additional resources in the community.
I currently see individual clients who are a young adult, mid-age adult, or older adult.
I find value in talk therapy and clients being able to reflect on issues or difficult situations. After discussion, I like to collaborate with clients on what behavior(s) they want to change and develop steps forward so change is successful.
In conjunction with CBT, I use solution focused therapy to help clients develop achievable and actionable steps towards an identified goal(s).
Strength-based therapy is part of the foundation of my practice and how I provide therapy. It is important to me to identify clients' strengths and how they can assist clients in achieving their set therapy goals.
