I am a therapist. Who ALSO has a therapist and has been through the process of finding/seeing therapists. I get it. It isn't easy but it it worth it. Taking the first step to seek counseling can be a daunting experience. Rather than viewing the process as courageous, it is easy to become overwhelmed by uncertainties regarding the process, relationship, and fears of being misunderstood and/or finding the right fit. My view of counseling is simple, and based upon three core principles: authenticity, (being true to oneself), honesty, and growth. I am passionate about creativity, music and animals. I prefer to be direct and utilize humor constantly. I interweave these into sessions and you will often see one of my pets in the session (they are bound to confidentiality too, don't worry!). I utilize EMDR in my sessions when appropriate and specialize in working with adults experiencing trauma related distress issues, adverse childhood experiences, depression and boundary issues, identity and sexuality issues. I love working with the LGBTQIA population.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, we'll go through initial introductions and then start to identify the issues that may be causing dilemma. It will be an opportunity for each of us to determine whether the other will be a good fit for future sessions. I always end my first session with having the client think overnight at least about scheduling a follow up, so there in no pressure.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I value the therapeutic relationship above all else, first and foremost. If there is not trust and safety, vulnerability cannot be connected to. I will often say in the first session, "I would rather upset you to your face rather than behind your back. If I have questions, thoughts or concerns, I will voice them to you and hope to build the relationship toward you doing the same!". I utilize methods to assist you in recognizing, identifying and changing your thinking and the behaviors that support problems, whether conscious or not. With NO judgment! We'll laugh and then work on it. Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) when appropriate for processing traumatic memories and stuck cognitions. If you have never heard of it, I'll educate you! There's so much more...

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Again, I value this process beyond the realm of profession and am an advocate for mental health awareness and therapy. I know what it is like to sit with the "robot" or "suit" and that is not my style of therapy. While I have a plan and we will have goals, I prefer meeting needs in the moment rather than sticking with strict structure or repertoire. I recognize this may bring feelings of unease to some! However, I want you to know that I am also in the trenches doing the work! While I may not know your specific pain, I know pain and can help. I will self disclose when it is appropriate. You will get a warm, direct human and we will work.
