Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

In my practice, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. I work collaboratively with clients to identify unhelpful thinking patterns and explore how these patterns affect their daily lives. For example, a client may think, “I always fail,” which can contribute to sadness and avoiding responsibilities. Together, we examine the evidence for that belief and develop a more balanced thought, such as, “Some things are difficult for me, but I have succeeded before and can take small steps forward.” I also use behavioral strategies, including activity scheduling, problem-solving, and practicing coping skills. We establish realistic goals and identify activities clients can practice between sessions, such as completing a thought record or taking one manageable step toward a task they have been avoiding. During follow-up sessions, we review what worked, discuss barriers, and adjust our approach. I adapt CBT to each client’s developmental level, cultural background, strengths, and needs. I validate their experiences and recognize that some difficulties reflect real environmental challenges. My goal is to help clients develop practical skills, respond more flexibly to challenges, and become more confident in managing their emotions and behaviors.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

In my practice, I use Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help clients explore different “parts” of themselves with curiosity and compassion. These parts may carry painful emotions, try to maintain control, or react strongly to stressful situations. I help clients understand these parts as aspects of their inner experience and explore the protective roles they may serve. For example, a client may describe one part that wants close relationships and another that pushes people away to avoid being hurt. Rather than judging either response, I help the client explore each part’s concerns and needs. I may ask, “What does this part want you to understand?” or “What is it afraid would happen if it stopped protecting you?” This process can help clients recognize internal conflict and respond with greater understanding. I also help clients access what IFS calls “Self,” a state characterized by qualities such as calmness, curiosity, compassion, and confidence. The goal is to build a more trusting relationship with their parts rather than eliminate them. I follow the client’s pace, emphasize grounding and emotional safety, and avoid pushing clients to revisit painful experiences before they feel ready. Throughout the process, I connect these insights to treatment goals, such as reducing self-criticism, strengthening emotional regulation, and improving relationships.
