Ronald Cummings
Hi, my name is Ron Cummings. I decided to become a therapist after dealing with panic disorder in my own life. For a while, I also had agoraphobia and was afraid to leave my house out of fear and anxiety over having a panic attack. This also led me to depression over thinking I might never be able to leave my home again and live normally. However, through therapy I was able to recover, return to college, and obtain a teaching credential. During my time as a teacher, I realized that many of my students were having problems learning due to what they experienced in the world outside of school and at home. As a result, I returned to college and obtained an MA in Counseling Psychology in 2013 and then my full LMFT license with the state of California. Through the years, I have discovered that life does not always provide us a smoothly paved road. I experienced many things that tempted me to give up, but I was able to make it through these things due to the support of others and through therapy. This is the reason that I am a therapist – to help others receive the help they need. I believe in working collaboratively with my clients on goals they wish to reach as well as overcoming anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and situational difficulties. I look to the past to deal with attachment issues of childhood that may inform the present of the client. I have training in CBT,Solution Focused Therapy, Client Centered Therapy, EMDR, DBT, exposure therapy, Gottman Couples Therapy . I use different therapies as it fits with the client.
First session
The first session is for assessment. I try to focus on a client's goals at the beginning and the struggles that they are facing before gathering other information about the client.
Strengths
I think my biggest strength is understanding through experience and training in the areas of anxiety and depression. Not everyone has experienced anxiety to the depths that I have and can understand how others relate to a person with panic attacks or agoraphobia. Most people don't know how this can lead into depression when the person with panic attacks life changes almost overnight due to fear of something that never bothered them before.
Ideal clients
My ideal client would be someone who is interested in growth and has good idea of their own goals from therapy. I prefer clients who tell me if they dislike something in therapy and willing to help me find ways to make things work. I also prefer clients who are willing to deal with issues that may be brought up from therapy sessions.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I have been using this method for 11 years know and use it for helping with anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD and relationships.
EMDR
I have been using this for 5-6 years now for treatment of PTSD. I have seen many great results reprocessing trauma.
