LMHC, 14 years of experience
New to Grow
Hello! I am Bethany Fitzroy and I have been working as a counselor for approximately 15 years. Previous to my work as a counselor, I worked as a preschool teacher and public-school paraprofessional, therefore I have worked with children and families for close to 20 years! In addition to providing outpatient counseling services, I work as a school adjustment counselor.
During a first session, we will identify the reason for seeking therapy and articulate specific goals for the treatment. Time will be spent to learn important background information (family, school, any relevant medical information, etc.) and time will be allocated for the client to share any of their agenda items.
A strength of mine is being solution based and using data to ensure that interventions are reducing negative symptoms and increasing the use of positive skills. As a Christian counselor, the fruits of the Spirit are core values that orient the goals of the treatment session. For example, as a client with low frustration tolerance learns coping skills, the hoped outcome is peace.
I have worked with children and youth and their families for almost 20 years! The majority of my experience has been teaching coping skills, problem solving skills and emotional and behavioral regulation to help with common stressors and demands for the given developmental age. This could look different given the presenting stressor of the client. Specific interventions could include teaching relaxation techniques, reading through relevant books, the use of scenario cards, collaborating on a behavior plan, role play, etc.
Taking in the client's comfort level at the center, I can incorporate scripture, prayer, and bible centered alignment to the counseling sessions while also utilizing evidence-based counseling methods.
I have over 14 years of experience providing coaching to parents by sharing the skills taught to their children in therapy in order to allow for cross over care.
I have had additional post Masters training in CBT and have utilized this method for the past 14 years. My sessions utilize the direct practice of calming techniques, stress management, cognitive feedback, emotional regulation skills training, etc.
I utilize games and other forms of play to provide direct instruction and opportunities for the practicing of emotional identification, self-regulation, and problem solving when working with children.
I have taken additional classes post-Master's degree on trauma informed care and have incorporated the principles into my practice.
