Darren Gish
I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in Washington State with 9 years of experience supporting individuals through a wide range of challenges. I believe every person has the capacity to create meaningful and lasting change in their life, and that everyone deserves access to quality mental health care. My approach is grounded in meeting clients where they are, without judgment, while creating a space where they can feel heard, understood, and supported. I have extensive experience working with anxiety, depression, trauma, difficult life transitions, and grief and loss. I work especially well with clients who are ready to take an honest look at where they are in life and are willing to take steps toward where they want to be. Therapy can be difficult work, but you don't have to navigate that process alone. My goal is to help you better understand yourself, work through what is holding you back, and build the tools and confidence needed to move forward.
First session
Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin understanding what brings you to therapy. You already did the hardest part by being honest with yourself about needing help. We’ll talk about what you’ve been experiencing, what you would like to be different, and what you hope to gain from counseling. I’ll also ask questions about your history and current circumstances so I can better understand the bigger picture. Most importantly, this is a space where you can be honest and open without fear of judgment. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Together, we’ll identify areas you would like to work on and begin developing a plan that feels realistic and meaningful for you. My goal is for you to leave our first session feeling heard, understood, and with a clearer sense of how we can work together moving forward.
Strengths
I bring a compassionate, nonjudgmental, and genuine approach to each session. I believe one of my greatest strengths is my ability to meet clients where they are while also helping them recognize their own strengths, patterns, and potential for growth. With 9 years of clinical experience, I bring knowledge and perspective from working with people facing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, and significant life changes. I strive to create a therapeutic relationship built on trust, honesty, and respect, where you can feel comfortable being your authentic self. I also believe in being both supportive and honest. Therapy is a collaborative process, and I will encourage you while also challenging you when appropriate. My goal is not simply to help you feel better in the moment, but to help you develop greater self-awareness, confidence, and practical tools that can support meaningful and lasting change. My primary clinical approach includes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and many other effective therapeutic approaches. We will spend some time working together to figure out what might work best for you and where you might be most comfortable.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is ready to take an honest look at what is happening in their life and is open to exploring what may need to change. You do not have to have all the answers or know exactly what you need from therapy—that is something we can discover together. I work well with individuals who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, or difficult life transitions and are ready to take steps toward feeling and living differently. I value clients who are willing to be open, curious, and engaged in the therapeutic process. You may be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of where to begin. Wherever you are starting from, I believe you have the capacity for growth and meaningful change. My role is to meet you there without judgment, help you understand what is keeping you stuck, and support you as you work toward the life you want.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a practical, evidence-based approach that helps you develop a healthier relationship with difficult thoughts and emotions rather than allowing them to control your life. ACT focuses on accepting what is outside of your control while identifying your personal values and taking meaningful steps toward the life you want. ACT can be helpful for people experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, difficult life transitions, and other challenges that may leave them feeling stuck or overwhelmed. It can be especially helpful if you find yourself caught in cycles of overthinking, avoidance, or self-criticism and want to learn how to respond to difficult experiences in a more flexible and purposeful way.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, client-centered approach that helps you explore your own reasons for change. Rather than telling you what you should do, MI helps you identify what matters to you, work through uncertainty, and build the confidence and motivation to take meaningful steps forward. MI can be especially helpful if you feel stuck, uncertain about making a change, or find yourself experiencing mixed feelings about what you want. It can support people working through life transitions, unhealthy patterns, relationship concerns, or other areas where change feels difficult or overwhelming.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured, practical approach that explores the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT helps you identify unhelpful patterns of thinking and develop healthier ways of responding to difficult emotions and situations. CBT can be especially helpful for people experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, or other challenges that may be influenced by negative thought patterns or behaviors. It can provide practical tools to help you manage symptoms, build confidence, and make meaningful changes in your daily life.
